"Strictly Ballroom Dancing", the book to accompany the prestigious BBC series of the same name, has this to say about the (ballroom) tango hold:

"The man's flexed-knee posture recalls the stiff-legged walk of the gauchos in their leather chaps; the woman's stance, head held back, allegedly derives from the fact that most of the men hadn't washed after a day on the range . . . . her right hand, low on his hip, is supposed to be fishing for his wallet."
