Re: [TANGO-L] TANGO-L Digest - 18 Nov 2005 to 19 Nov 2005 (#2005-317)

Hyla,
Nicely put, but I don't think there is any disagreement between your
comments and Lucia's. I apologize in advance as I don't want to put words in
anyone's mouth, but the music is the catalyst, it does not change, yet it inspires
movement that we can dance, the effect of the inspiration is a result of
hearing. The more we listen and hear the intricacies of the song, the more we
expand our enjoyment. The point is a catalyst is just something that doesn't
change but causes a reaction.
Early on I think music serves as an indicator, i.e. you hear a Sinatra, and
you think Foxtrot so you dance Foxtrot, a salsa and you dance salsa. As you
learn, and I believe many don't go further, and you gain experience you hear
several things in a piece of music, it becomes a much richer experience.
This growth inspires your movements in different ways. Depending on your mood or
your partners, each time a combo or DJ plays a particular song, you hear
something different and it inspires you and you dance it a bit different. Tango
music lends itself to many more variations and mutual interpretations than
other forms of music, but if you hear any type of music and it inspires you to
dance a dance other than what it might have been traditionally written or
interpreted as, so be it.
Just some thoughts,
