hi michael,
i follow/lead in open/ closed/ milonguero/ nuevo/ open and closed etc... and i find that i can "trance" "zone" in any style.  whether or not i zone, depends alot on the leader and his sensitivity (embrace, placement, timing, etc) towards me, the follower.... aside from that, other factors can be

- my own mood 
- health (tired)
- the environment
- who i just finished dancing with
-the music

what's surprising is when all the above listed factors are terrible- maybe i'm cranky and tired, the room is stuffy and smells, i just finished dancing with someone who shoved me around, and the sound system is flat- a leader can still give me a dance that is unbelievable.  but that's tango.. full of surprises.
