[TANGO-L] Standardization-The answer to everyone's prayers
Hi Listeros:
I feel like the two thousand year old man (Thanks Carl Reiner)!
When they discovered the Rosetta stone and suddenly began to develope the
facility to finally translate the heiroglyphics on Ancient Egyptian Tombs, they
discovered that there was one group of dancers who wanted to get everyone who
danced to use a heel lead. A two thousand year war erupted between those
who opposed the heel lead and those who insisted that the dance walk must be
taken on the balls of the feet. That debate seems to have landed right in the
middle of the Tango Discussion List in 2004.
Jonathan Swift (slowly) wrote about the fierce wars that seemed to never end
or reach a conclusion (in jolly old England) due to one group insisting that
the large end of the egg should be cracked as opposed to the small end. The
two opposing political parties, the Large Enders and the Small Enders, still
are arguing to this date over the proper end to crack the egg.
When some one suggested that a syllabus be reduced to writing someone
objected to that because firstly he/she didn't know how to write or read while
someone else noted that we couldn't reduce anything to writing because no one up
that point had reached an agreement of just what "writing things down" meant.
We have no alphabet.....Some guy piiped up and suggested Kangi Script. (What
the hell is that?) For thousands of years we simply communicated orally what was
"the Torah" until someone observed that we seem to have expanded our ten
commandments to 72,468 laws and no one seemed to have the capability to remember
enough of these to verbalize them so they commenced to reduce these biblical
writings into one consolidated book called the bible....Even with the
discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls we have been unable to agree at all on what belongs
in the bible and wht does not......... There is hope though that eventually
we will have reached the pinnacle of civilized existence today (in the near
future) because......now having standardized all these old laws and myths we
all believe in the same God and we all (globally) think the same way and
everything is orderly and there is perfect harmony from the Dali Lama to the Pope
and from the Israelis and throughout the Islamic World.......from the Buddhists
to the Shintoists from the Monks in Nepal to the Andean Indians from the
Eskimos to the Methodists from the Crdoats to the Serbs......everyone since they
reduced everything to writing and standardised it all now is at peace and no
disputes never ever will arise between any of them......and everyone loves
each other and no one cares whether you start sidewards with the left foot or
backwards with the right foot. No one really cares whether you start the waltz
on one and finish with your feet together on the third beat...no one cares
whether you dance the Mambo or the salsa on the one or the two beat..... and I
really don't care how you hold me when we dance but if you put your hand on me
there...just one more time I will get a gun and blow your ass to kingdom com
e! Phew! That doesn't sound harmonioous to me!!!!
I remember having a dialogue with one Tango Dancer in France who was quoting
me passages from an authenticTango Technique book published in 1916 written
in spanish by an Argentinean author!
And Shaquille Oneal said, "Let the truth be told!" Who is Shaq? How many
homeruns will he hit this season? Kobe Ryan??? Who? Doesn't he live in Eagle,
Colorado? Whatever happened to Dan Quayle? Jackson! Phil or Stonewall!
An Ocho is an Ocho is an Ocho......or is it? Let me consult my latest list of
authentic Tango terminology!
Respectfully yours,
Arturo
