Dear List
I was curious as to listeros opinions on the music of Gotan Project. For
dancing? Listening? It's use in Milongas?
How do you feel about their music?
Regards
Dani
Apologies if this has already been covered on the list. I tried to search
Tango-L archives and didn't come up with much.
Dear Dani,
Tango purists don't like folks mucking with the music. Piazolla was once known as the 'Tango Assassin' ! But things do change. Personally, I'll probably never buy 'La Ravancha del Tango' or any other 'Gotan Project' CD. But it's great to dance to on occasion. It makes a great novelty Item to young tangueros. I'm not opposed to alternative tango music, but I'd like it to sound more like traditional tango music if I'm to buy it. 'Gotan Project' is too thumpy and has to many weird sounds for me but as I said, it's great on occasion. I think later Piazolla is alternative enough for my tastes.(Yeah I know! Piazolla is technically not classified as 'Alternative.'But you know what I mean!!)
The Gotan Project composion 'Triptico' was their number one hit. Some of their other music are remakes of traditional and other well known tangos such as 'Vuelvo al Sur' (which is a Piazolla piece). Another remake is 'Last Tango in Paris'
Warm Regards
Tango Guy
