Re: [TANGO-L] Assassination tango
Heyo Friends,
> Assassination Tango :Can we call a spade a spade?
Strong opinions are nothing new to tango-l and I don't think our anonymous
friend was trolling, Huck. This negative review simply reinforces the
insight that tango is created anew by each of us according to our own very
personal expectations and need for expression. Especially, it exposes our
insecurities and prejudices. Can a gringo like Duvall EVER satisfy somebody
who deeply and personally feels that tango plays a role in his/her identity?
Not a chance!
Let me give y'all my own impressions. Thanks, Victor, for posting Alistair
Brown's review. I agree that opportunities were missed. I would have liked
more on the mole in the BA conspiracy. Who, what, how? But loose ends in a
story are like life. I mean, how wide is the swath of logical resolution
and order that we each create as we walk behind the lawn mower of life? I
happen to disagree that the question of the age difference between John J.
and Manuela was fodder for further character development - intriguing though
it may be from the outside. From the personal perspective of having a
significantly younger (Argentine) GF, it just happens! That's all. People
are just people and age is a state of mind.
Notwithstanding the problems with the film, I enjoyed watching Argentines
just being Argentine. And the fact that nothing in the film was larger than
life (or death) left me wondering. Every day we deal with characters in
whom good and bad are compartmentalized without extensive rationalization.
One of the great benefits of experience is the insight into what is and is
not bad. We so often have to make evaluations without some Hollywood writer
(or network news pundit) doing it for us. So, do YOU know anybody like John
J.? Without knowing it, maybe you do!
Cheers,
Frank - Mpls.
