Re: [TANGO-L] TEACHING
Good teaching is an act of generosity, which is always
a risky business. You never know what you gonna get
back in return. A good teaching method that lights one
class afire, extinguishes another. An approach that
bores one student, changes another's life.
Somebody once said, "To teach is to create space in
which the community of truth is practiced." Now, if
you want to start a World War III, just ask a
question, "What is true tango?". All I know that
objectivity at its best is a commitment to critical
discourse.
So, a conversation, internal or external, can be named
as one quality of good teaching. Well, let me tell
you. I've seen some teachers who can talk and tell
stories. But can they really teach you to dance?
I've read somewhere that in its original meaning, a
"professor" was NOT someone with esoteric knowledge
and technique. Instead, the word referred to a person
able to make a profession of faith in the midst of a
dangerous world. All good teachers, I believe, have
access to this confidence. It comes not from the ego,
but from a soul-deep sense of being at home in the
world despite its dangers. This is the authority by
which good teachers teach.
So go ahead and keep searching for your own good
teachers. And when you find one, be happy, but don't
assume that he or she can be a good teacher to someone
else.
Cheers,
El Duke.
