[TANGO-L] Tango DJ Conference?

We recently had a weekend of workshops in Pittsburgh with Robert
Hauk, which were simply fantastic. Much of it was because he was so
generous with his knowledge of music and how it applied to the dance.
It really opened our eyes to concepts we hadn t been taught before.
So much more to learn particularly with music. One important issue
we discussed with Robert was the effect good DJ ing can have in
growing a community, something Tom alluded to in his Community
Growth thread. Good DJ ing keeps the energy up yet doesn t allow
the floor to get out of control (very important for beginners). It
keeps events attractive.

Thus, was planted the seed of a TANGO DJ CONFERENCE an event in
which some of the leading tango DJ s could share their knowledge with
DJ wannabees in communities that could really use that knowledge. A
formal talk about music, a night of just spinning tunes and talking,
regular workshops, and of course, milongas.

For growing communities developing a good DJ can be difficult. As an
organizer, my hands are full just planning and implementing events,
and I don t have the time (or skill) to really study the music.
Looking at the 5-6 tango groups within a 3-hour drive of Pittsburgh,
I m guessing that I m not alone in my dilemma, though there s
interest in music at every place I visit. The internet and Tango-L
have been excellent resources, but I think an additional push may be
helpful.

So I d like to gauge interest in such an event. If you re
interested, as either a DJ guest or a workshop attendee, please let
me know. I d also love to hear what other ideas people have.

Happy Holidays!
