Re: TANGO-L Digest - 28 Feb 2001 to 1 Mar 2001 (#2001-55)

Dear List,

For the two individuals last week inquiring about French tangos,
checkout the CD entitled "Paris Musette" (info below). I love this
collection of Parisian cafe music. It is very, very close to Argentine
Tango. There is an eight page history of the music included with the CD,
starting with Musette's beginnings in 1867. There is mention of Italians
at some point in Paris passing themselves off as Argentines to play this
music. I seem to remember reading something elsewhere about the
Paris-Argentine-Musette connection. Musette and Argentine Tango had
similar developments in that there was a cross-cultural influence, strong
Italian presence, marginalized underworld aspect, a Golden Age, and a dying
out when rock & roll arrived on the scene. One can see why the Parisians
took instantly to Argentine Tango when they first saw it in the 20's - it
was so similar to their Musette. There are tangos (Arg.), vals, afro-vals,
Latin vals, even gypsy, paso-doble and mazurka influences on this CD.
There is one tango piece "La Foule" by Argentine composer Angel Cabral. A
must-have CD for the French tango collector.

Kind regards,
Christina
