music -- concert, dance

A friend wrote to remind me that one of the most important factors that
contributed to the end of the tango dance scene was the fact that during
the 1950s was the Argentine government cracked down on
milongueros--although it never outlawed tango. The crackdown shifted the
dance scene to small neighborhood clubs. By the time the crackdown ended,
the more visible energy shifted toward rock and roll music. The orchestras
shifted toward concert music as means of survival.

To me, this suggests that the improvements in the quality of recordings
probably helped facilitate the survival tango music. Had orchestras been
unable to shift to a concert sound in their recordings, there likely would
have been no market for the music.

With best regards,
Steve
