A awkward problem and one I face from time to time. Something that I have
tried is to say to my partner that "I" seem to be having trouble with my
balance ( not her ). I then ask her to do something special with her left arm.

I find it is usually the woman's left arm around my shoulder that pulls me
forward. So I politely ask if she would just rest the BACK OF HER WRIST on
my shoulder instead of wrapping it around the top. In this position,
whenever my partner races ahead, her arm will drift off into space as she
cannot hold onto my shoulder.

After a few "lift offs" the woman usually senses what is happening her self
and.

Try it and tell me if it works for you.
