Refering to Astrids experiences in Germany, I want
to comment:=20
I cannot say anything about Berlin, but in the other
cities I have danced so far (T=FCbingen, Stuttgart, Bremen,
Freiburg, Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Mannheim, M=FCnchen, D=FCsseldorf,
Karlsruhe, G=F6ttingen, Hannover, Braunschweig, Kassel and=20
probably forgetting some) at least with at milongas it is=20
normal to exchange partners and not dance exclusively with the=20
one you came with or met there. You will sometimes meet a couple=20
who does that, but it is not the rule.
With practicas it depends a little on the teacher, I guess. But
still most of those I attended changed around.
Cheers
Ralph

Yes Melinda
Astor Pantaleon Piazzolla was one of the best bandoneonist that Anibal
Troilo ever had in his orchestra, from the 1940=B4s until the 1950=B4s =
when
Piazzolla went to New York to make some experiences with alternative mu=
sic.
I prefer particularly three tangos of the "old" Piazzolla
Quejas de bandoneon
Mi refugio
La casita de mis viejos
You know , is funny, some people (not you Melinda) seems to consider
Piazzolla as bursting out from a bubble in the 60's with his "new " tan=
go.
It is a heat argument if "new" Piazzolla could be danced . Once , dance=
r
Juan Carlos Copes made a dancing of Piazzolla music, played by Piazzoll=
a
live. After the dancing, Piazzolla went slowly to Copes and speak very =
low
into his ear
"See ?? Piazzolla could be danced "
Keep well
Alberto

None of the tangos that Alberto mentions is by Piazzolla, old or new. Lyrics
aside, and to the best of my knowledge, the facts are
Tango Composer
Quejas de Bandoneon Juan de Dios Filiberto
Mi refugio Juan Carlos Cobian
La Casita de Mis viejos Juan Carlos Cobian
I am sure they all have been played by Piazzolla at one time or another.
Cheers to all,

Alberto wrote from Argentina:
It seems tango salon is a label or a cliche to separate the milonga style
dancing.
In milonga dancing you make more movements with your hips , you "place" your
steps in a different shape . Milonga roots are very close to candombe , the
afroamerican dance brought by negro slaves to the Rio de la Plata basin.
***
Now the closest I ever came to having the difference explained (other than
by Carlos) is this:
A conversation between Alejandro Zacco (the dance teacher hired by one of my
schools), fresh over from Bs.As., and me during dinner...
A.Z.: "Which style of tango do you prefer, tango or tango dance?"
a:"Excuse me?"
A.Z.:"Tango or tango dance?"
a:"Is there a difference ?"
A.Z." Well, tango is what is danced in Argentina."
a:"Uhuh."
A.Z.:"And tango dance is what is taught all over the rest of the world."
a:"Hm. Actually, I don't have a clue. All I know is, somebody told me, that
my other teacher prefers canyengue. But that teacher never talks about the
difference."
A.Z.: "Ah, so you like canyengue !"
a.:"??? Yeah, maybe..."
At the next milonga Alejandro told me that I was really good at canyengue.
So now at least I know what I have been practising on Sundays for the past
year.

Subject: Re: show tango
Apropos recent discussion about idiots trying to do show tango
on the crowded dance floor, I was flipping through the TV channels
this morning when I came upon Fernanda y Guillermo doing tango on
some Spanish version of the Today show.
When they were done, the hostess interviewed them, and asked,
"Aren't some of those things you do a bit dangerous?"
Fernanda replied that they were doing show tango, and that
you should never attempt to do such things on a crowed dance floor,
as it would be impossible. She then added that some inexperienced
social dancers get confused between show tango and social tango, and
cause trouble for others.
Her polite use of the word "confused" (rather than "selfish"
and/or "idiotic") was amusing!

I wish the moderator, if any, could put a lid on some of Astrid's
postings. This person seems to have yet to meet a clichi she didn't
like.

Dear Carlos and list,
I'm sure Alberto Gesualdo had referred to those Tangos not as composed by
Piazzola, but the version played by Piazzolla of those good tangazos!

Subject: Info on Paris?
Hi, List--
Three of us from Austin and one from D.C. will be in Paris from October 10
to 16. I would appreciate information about the best milongas, insights
about dancing in Paris, and any general tips for the tango traveler in
Paris. If anyone living in Paris would be willing to be a local contact,
that would be great, too. We will be staying at the Hotel Richmond on 11
Rue de Helder.
Thanks.
Barbara
