Subject: Lunfardo-MALEVO
An interesting question:
What can you tell me about "malevo". Is it lunfardo? How would it be used?
Is
the L pronounced?
Thanks
Chas Gale, Denver, Colorado, USA
Malevo is a word that appears in many tango lyrics.
The word MALEVO means : Maleante, maligno, maton, pendenciero.
Maleante: Hoodlum.
Maligno: Spiteful, evil minded, wicked, vicious, malicious, malevolent.
Maton : (there should be an accent on the o) Hoodlum, ruffian. Ruffian in
French and Castilian means pimp in English this
word also means: Boisterous brutal fellow.
Pendenciero: Bully, Brawler, quarrelsome, rowdy.
Malevo is lunfardo. The Spanish Royal Academy of Letters accepts words
originated in other areas of the Ex Spanish Empire.
So Malevo is accepted as an Argentinism meaning: Mean, evil doer,
malevolent. This means that the word Malevo will appear both in a Dictionary
of Lunfardo and a Dictionary of the Castilian Language.
All the letters are pronounced in Castilian except for the H, and the U in
combinations such as que, gue.
Use: People would call somebody by his family name preceded by de attribute
malevo. El Malevo Fernandez, El Malevo Munoz, etc. In reference to somebody
with the above mentioned attributes.
Malevo Munoz (should be Mun~oz, the~ on top of the n.)or Carlos de la Pua
are literary names of Carlos Raul Mun~oz, the writer author of "La crencha
engrasada" the most important literary work written in Lunfardo. It is
written in verse. This work is an intelligent vision of the ethics, the deep
ideology and metaphysics of the marginated human beings of Buenos Aires.
La crencha engrasada - Crencha : Latin crinis hair, also the line that
divides the hair.
Engrasada: greased.
As you can see Malevo could be used also as a nome de plume, a literary
nickname.

We were lucky to hear Ruben Milonga's video-lectures on the history of
tango dancing and history of tango music. What a wonderful educational
experience that was for tango community in Washington D.C.! Ruben showed
us and explained different body movement, styles of tango (video archive
he has is fabulous) as it evolved with the tango music. Highly recommend
Ruben Milonga! Fabulous dancer and teacher, very intelligent and
knowledgeable tango-anthropologist, Ruben has opened our eyes: why we
dance the way we dance.
Ruben's lectures cover a period of tango evolution between 1860 and
1960.

Subject: Tango ad in Wired
A few days ago someone mentioned an ad in Wired featuring tango
dancers. Could you tell me the date of the issue and the page
number?
When I was in NYC this spring they were shooting an ad that they
said would be in Fortune. Is that the same ad? Has anyone seen
it?
Thanks,
Ricardo

It is the same ad. I will find out the issue date for you.
I have seen the ad, it looks nice.
they are my students , so I can not be very objective :)
They are both professional ballroom dancers, taking up on tango.

Your best bet is calling Serdar Sungar , the organizer for Baila Tango in Istanbul when you get there at 0532 664 8836, for details.

They have milongas on Fridays at Taksim Square, at Muhendishane on Mondays. And practicas on Wednesdays and Sundays.
