Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2000 19:56:09 EST From: Jeanne Hill <GeneJeanne @AOL.COM> Subject: TANGO TECHNIQUE WORKSHOP with MARCELO SOLIS On 03/22/2000 9:58:33 PM Pacific Standard Time, Steve Lee sent the following post concerning Marcelo Solis and Yanina Messina. This message was also indented for TANGO-L @MITVMA.MIT.EDU, so I am forwarding it now. Jeanne Hill Hello List, Marcelo Solis And Yanina Messina held workshops here in Minneapolis/St.Paul a little under a month ago and people here are still buzzing about them. As instructors, their demeanor and attitude were positively charming, making learning from them a pleasure. A) They are very good educators 1) They communicate as opposed to excommunicate. If at first the instruction doesn't get through, they try another tact as opposed to exhibiting frustration or voicing the same instruction louder. 2) They are good coaches. They can spot why something isn't working and have sound technical knowledge about how to correct it. 3) They are able to adjust what and how they instruct to the needs of the class or the individual student. They model their instruction methods after the communication essential in tango; they instruct, then they observe and appropriately adjust to bring out the best in their students. 4) They take pride in their teaching. B) They are good ambassadors for tango here in the TC. 1) They worked within the "culture" (the way we do things) here in the Twin Cities. 2) They are flexible and more accepting of other styles that we (having seen other tango instructors) know exist out there. Their exercises of "different possibilities" and "other ways" work well with TC'ers because TC'ers in general don't respond well to "the only way" proselytizers. That's why the "only way" Moral Majority (Minority?)have a hard time here. Because of Marcelo and Yanina's recognition and acknowledgment of different styles, our constituents will not be as confused when they hear what seems to be contradictions from different instructors. Everyone with whom I've spoken, that took private lessons from them, had nothing but good things to say about their instruction. When asked whether or not they would take more lessons from them again, the answer was a resounding "Yes!" The impact of their dance instruction is demonstrated by how bits and pieces of what they taught are starting to be seen on the social dance floor. I give M&Y a "two thumbs up" recommendation if you're thinking of bringing them into your tango community. If someone wants to send me money for this recommendation fine, however...I receive no financial incentives or benefits by providing this recommendation. Steve Lee, Dictator, "Twin Cities Tango"

Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2000 18:15:36 -0800 From: Michael Kempf <lvdancing @YAHOO.COM> Subject: Question I've been curious for some time to know how others handle this. I've been dating a wonderful woman for the last 2 months. She was a ballerina for many years (began as a child of 5), and has pursued dance throughout her life. I, unfortunately, have just begun to learn (we met in fact at a dance studio). She and I are at very different levels, and although we have tried to dance together, she obviously doesn't enjoy it. In addition, we've both noticed that when we now attend milongas, she is now rarely asked to dance. I, of course, am curious to know if other couples have experienced this, and how they solved this. I would hate to think that we would have to alternate turns to attend these milongas. Thanks. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2000 22:18:46 EST From: Timothy Pogros <TimmyTango @AOL.COM> Subject: dissappointed In a message dated 3/26/00 11:58:58 PM Central Standard Time, milonguera @DELLNET.COM writes: << I just attended CITA 2000 and was very disappointed, mainly due to getting to dance very little. The CITA milongas were extremely crowded. They were filled with many local people, and other visitors not attending CITA, and there were many, many couples and more women than men. At a few of the CITA milongas I did not get to dance at all, and at the most, >> It seems the biggest problem in the dance world, including Tango, is the lack of male dancers. I could have one of the biggest communities if only I had male dancers. The women that attend my classes are very attractive ladies. Many very well to do. I have several doctors, a high school principal, a restaurant owner, interior decorator, all coming to my classes. The women come to my classes, but after a while, they get tired of not dancing and quite coming. I either have a feast or famine, when it come to people attending my classes or milongas. I was wondering if any other communities had this problem and did something about it that worked. Tim Pogros (TimmyTango)

Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2000 21:22:12 -0800 From: Cammie Strange <milonguera @DELLNET.COM> Subject: Warning - thefts in Buenos Aires While in Buenos Aires recently for two weeks including CITA, I was the victim of three thefts/attempted thefts. After the fact, many people told me what happened was common, but I had not heard of it at all beforehand. The first incident was fairly minor. My coin purse was taken out of my evening purse at one of the CITA milongas, at Club Espanol. The next day I was told the building was very safe and it was unlikely that anyone would have taken it. However, later in the week it was announced that somehow other people were getting into the building and that there had been some thefts. The night of the last (CITA) milonga, at Club Espanol, there were many security guards in the building, especially on the floor where the milonga took place. Then the following Saturday (March 18th) I was sightseeing in the Plaza de Mayo area by myself, taking pictures, and someone stole my wallet out of my backpack after creating a diversion. A thin mustard sauce was spilled on me (I didn't even feel it) and a man came up and pretended to help wipe me off. Meanwhile, an unseen accomplice stole my wallet out of my backpack. I didn't even feel it but some other people nearby came up to me right after it happened and let me know. I was told afterwards that I should not have been wearing a backpack in BsAs but I was out for the day and had no idea it wasn't safe. Ironically, I went back the next day and a very nice looking elderly couple attempted the same thing (implying that it was bird droppings). This time I was prepared and they didn't get anything. Both times it was in broad daylight, and on Sunday, there were many people around, including some guards in uniform right across the street! Many of you traveling to BsAs may already be aware of this problem, but just in case, I thought I should share what happened to me. Cammie Strange, Colorado.

Take all the lessons you can, practice and if possible take privates together. She might be at different Tango level, but hopefully on the same wave length when it comes to you and the relationship. If Tango is number 1 for her, then you are not. Don't waste your time. Remember, long lasting love and relationship is what counts in the long run, not pass times. I feel some camaraderie with you, because 4 years ago I met a wonderful tanguera in a Ballroom Dancing party. I never danced Argentine Tango before, but because she was so passionate about it, I started taking lessons. She attended all the classes with me, even though she was bored at many of them. We went to milongas together, she didn't enjoy my Tango so much, but loved my company and friendship. We took some privates together, practiced together and felt both committed to making it work. For me it meant extra effort and for her patience. About a year and a half ago we got married, and on Wednesday we are flying to Buenos Aires. I hope my answer to your question was helpful.
