Imagine my surprise. An additional thing may be that it is easier to change direction at any moment if one comes to a 'point'. i.e., all four legs are more less in the same place(partner could be front or to any side) this will enable a quick change in direction and also keep the 'pattern' the same(sort of folding in the pattern before changing direction and unfurling after the change in direction, if there is space ;-) rajan.

I think anyone who is studying tango is wonderful and should be praised for their effort. Rico Rico, you asked for it -- what kind of male partners do we females dread? The hand cruncher is definitely one, the guy who uses a deadly grip to force us around the floor, ouch! The arm pumper is another, swinging and swaying and sending both of us off balance. Then there is the skyscraper, they guy who holds your arm so high you lose all circulation by the end of the dance. How about the trickster, the guy who has to try out every new goncho and giro and leg-tangling step, the one who seems to have forgotten that we are dancing, not performing. Then there is the groper, running his hand up and down your back while he presses his chest to yours or sticks his thigh between your legs. We dread the dipsters, the guys who want to swoop about in all sorts of ghastly poses and throw us over backwards on the final note. The marksters are harmless but boring, stepping every step exactly to the beat, never varying, never interpreting the music -- just! stick! to! that! beat! The bobbers are harmless too but take all the elegance out of the dance as they bob-bob-bob along. Meanwhile the I-can-go-faster-than-you-can guys rush away all of the emotion. Every once in a while a stomper appears; where did he get the idea that a loud whack on the floor makes the dance better? But the partner I dread the most is the looker, the guy who is watching everyone else in the room, the one who is checking out that new woman in the red dress, the one who is watching his old girlfriend, the one who has forgotten that I am the woman in his arms for this dance . . . The partner I enjoy the most is the one who really hears the music, the one who focuses only on me and makes every move count, the one who dances with elegance and emotion, even if he knows only a few basic steps. Oh how lovely it is to dance with such a man and how I appreciate him for sharing the dance with me. Mary Jane Seattle and Phoenix

Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 12:18:46 +0000 From: Izabella Chaves <izabella-chaves @HOWARD-DE-WALDEN.CO.UK> Subject: TANGO NOTES Dear All, Friends of mine, a well-travelled, I hasten to add, couple, have recently returned from their visit to the States=2E They stayed in Indianapolis enjoying good weather, pleasant surroundings and, above all, politeness of the locals=2E Unfortunately, they did not dance any tango simply because Tango has not reached Indianapolis, yet! They spent the last two days of their journey in New York where they danced at two different venues - Saturday left them with a bruised rib-cage and a swollen foot inflicted by some inconsiderate tango dancing 'wrestler'(?) and, needless to say, something of bad taste in their mouth=2E However, undeterred, they went to a different venue on Sunday and=2E=2E=2E their low-ebb feelings were restored in an instant by a fantastic hospitality of tangueros present there - they were ex-pats from Argentina=2E My friends found them totally unselfish and well-mannered in every way - eager to dance with strangers, considerate about the floor space and safety for other dancers=2E They left New York on the wings of few favourite Tango tunes=2E And here is my point:- why cannot we all be like this? I have been following various polemics edited on the List pages for a good while now, albeit silently=2E Every so often a kind of verbal skirmish erupts and emotional disgruntlement spills out with a good dose of rudeness, disparaging comments and, sadly, occasional vulgar words=2E I know, life is fast and a lot faster in large and very busy cities such as N=2EY=2E or London (oh, yes, all is not rosy here in London, we do have a fair number of ill-mannered in every way tango 'wrestlers' too), but as far as tango venues go, it is the various hosts who, I think, should/could make certain that bad behaviour will not be tolerated=2E With best wishes, Izabella London, England
