Subject: Re: Thinking and Feeling
Tango gives us many pleasures. One of them is the intellectual pleasure of
thinking out a series of movements which appears right to us in the context
of the floor as it is currently populated, and then executing that sequence
satisfactorily. Actually doing the movements is a different pleasure,
producing something like proprioceptive sensations. On top of this is the
sense of communication with one's partners. There are probably many more.
What is, I think, uncontroversial is that, for most of us, we are more likely
to do something well if we know what it is we want to do. Often a tiny bit of
analysis (e.g. in an enrosque, turn you body first and your feet will follow)
makes a huge difference to the ease and pleasure of a movement. Of course,
after a while you cease to think about it, and just do it.
There is a pleasure in dancing, and another pleasure in learning. As, I hope,
most of us are forever learning, albeit at different levels, this second
pleasure will probably be part of our tango also forever. There doesn't have
to be just one pleasure.

I believe the subject was brought up some time ago, but I'll ask anyway:
Does anyone know where to obtain this documentary? I've searched videostores
everywhere without any luck. (I even bought "Tango: bayle nuestro" because I
thought it was this documentary. Good movie, but not the one I wanted.)
An additional problem is that I would prefer it to be in PAL-format as I
live in Norway.
Thankful for any help!

Dear Tangueros & Tangueras:
To be more specific about the address of my fabulous Argentine Tango teachers
in Buenos Aires, Ernesto & Norma are at Callao 240 (not Corrientes).
They hold classes there on Monday, Wednesday & Friday at 7:30 PM
Their telephone number in Buenos Aires is 43748730.
It is my belief that if you can understand their language(s) and they are
multilingual (you can always ask for an interpretor or bring one yourself)
their
unique approach to teaching the Tango will telescope the length of time it
takes you to absorb some of the subtleties of this most fascinating art
form.
Tell them Arturo from Florida, USA sent you. And I miss their teaching badly!
Sincerely,
Arturo
PS I do not get paid for this and it is not a promotion! I am recommending
the world of Argentine Tango enthusiasts to a real find in Argentina. You do
not know what you are missing if you fail to take at least a a dozen lessons
at this school!

I write to the Listeros of the Tango Discussion Group, Tango-L
There are some teachers whose teaching of Tango leaves an indelible mark on
your Tango. Sitting in a one hour lecture by Rodolfo Dinzel about the
history of Tango music, at last year's Tango Congress at Miami Beach, left
me thirsting for more. If there is a more knowledgeable person than Mr.
Dinzel in the field of Tango, I have not met them. Gloria & Rodolfo were in
the original cast of Tango Argentino. Their teaching will appeal to the
intellectual side of any Tangueros & Tangueras who take their classes. I
have never been disappointed with what and how the Dinzels present their
material. There are ten other highly qualified instructors chosen for their
ability to impart their very sophisticated Tango subject matter.
It makes no sense for me to review all the details of all the 12 Instructors
at this Congress in a note to this Tango List. It does however, make sense
to obtain the 7 page booklet which does that and it explains everything you
need to know about the Congress. I have this seven page booklet in hand
that I could simply copy all the details from (comprehensively) but I do not
feel it is appropriate to clog your mail box with so much information. If
you want me to send you a booklet please simply e-mail your address to me and
I will get it into the mail to you instantly.
If you want to contact Jorge Nel at mrtango @netrox.net and make the request
from him you can do that (alternatively). If you want to phone Jorge and
speak to him personally or to his lovely co-organizer, Marta, simply pick up
your phone and dial (305) 446-9444.
If you are a "check in the mail person" and have decided to attend you can
simply place a check for $100 deposit in the mail to Tango Congress of Miami
Beach 2021 S.W. 37th Ave, Miami, FL 33145-1710 or if you want instant
gratification of registration do it via phone and pay via credit card, phone
Jorge Nel at 1 800 998 3342. I always feel better talking to a live person
to transact business of this type. Ask for transaction numbers or at least a
copy of the credit charge slip which indicates how much you are paying and
for what! Whatever your deposit is the balance is due by February 8,2000.
Early enrollment saves you $75 dollars.
I must remind you that you must make your own reservations with the Radisson
Deauville Resort 6701 Collins Ave. in Miami Beach, FL.
The best way to do that is to phone the hotel at (305) 865-8511 to assure
that you have your rooms prepaid and reserved for the duration of the
Congress or for
the additional time you wish to stay (before or after the congress) to enjoy
the South Beach sights and the lovely sun and sand by the beach. Be sure you
get the special $47.50 double occupancy rate offered for the congress. The
Radisson's Fax # is (305) 861-0590
Tell them you are coming for the Tango Congress so you will be charged the
reduced rate by the hotel reservations clerk.
Do not delay. Act today. Don't be disappointed! Register now! Do not wait
for the last minute!
Temperatures today range from the 50's into the 70's and is mostly sunny.
I do not get paid for this activity. Jorge is my good friend and I would
like him to succeed in this difficult endeavor. I offer my services gratis!
Sincerely,
Arturo

Congratulations, Arthur! Very well done!
By the way, I wish you continue to enlighten us all with your expert advice on the "not to miss" teachers of the Tango.
"Ernesto & Norma... " "Leaping lizards!!!!" They can't even do the salida! Ok, take a deep breath now...
Too much sun is not good, amigo. It affects your thinking, which is very important in Tango.
Regards,
Jorge.

In response to Anders' question about the PBS documentary about tango: I
telephoned public broadcasting to try to purchase this some time ago. They
have a catalogue and sell many of their programs - but NOT this one! And,
they said there are no plans to offer it for sale.
The only way I know to get it is to tape it yourself from a broadcast, so
thanks to Charles for letting us know to set our VCR (while we are out
dancing!) Unfortunately, Anders is out of luck, unless he makes
arrangements with someone from the list who will tape it for him......

Hola everyone,
Now that Arthur brings it up, I've been wanting to ask this question since the
last Miami Congresses.
I attended Jorge Nel & Marta's 1999 congress, and I had a fabulous time, worked
very hard, and got so much from the teaching. On my way back to Italy I
stopped to dance in Holland, where I think one finds the best tango dancers in
Europe, and I felt I was way ahead of where I had been several months earlier.
So I'd gladly attend again.
I'd like to know if anyone attended both Jorge Nel and Marta's congress AND
Randy and Lydia's, and if so, how did they compare?
Thanks.
Helaine

Subject: All night Milonga in Berkeley
Hi List,
I'd like to share with you how much fun I had on Saturday night at the
all night milonga in Berkeley. It is the first time I ever participated
to such an event, I've never been in Buenos Aires, so I didn't know the
real meaning of having the possibility to dance as much as I wanted.
After some hours of dancing, I do not know how to express it, but
something clicked and each dance had a special meaning. I felt smooth
and easy to lead by all the partners that asked me to dance. I felt I
could give joy to each person in a very natural way at the best of my
ability, some special energy was flowing among all the people around,
the music was always perfect and uplifting.
I am looking forward for another of these events and thank Guillermo for
putting out there his joyous energy and for the nice job he did with the
music. I as well thank Babs for the great environment she provided for
this all night event.
I'd also like to know any comment from the people that were there on
Saturday night.
I wish you all fun dances, bye Luisa

I would be interested in knowing what you mean by "their unique
approach to teaching the Tango will telescope the length of timeit
takes you to..."
There are many schools of tango and many styles. In the US we see a
finite subset of what is available, so if the Carmonas are unique and
different, it would be most beneficial to hear exactly how, and why
their method is so good.
One of the more recent realizations I have had is just how
differently one would teach tango in Argentina compared with in the
US.
