Subject: BsAs to Tokyo
Dear List,
It's been a year from I arrived at Japan. During this year
I found suprising thing about Japan and Tango.
How many tango bands and dancers have visited your place during
the year? Can you believe that in Tokyo, which is almost oposite
side of globe to BsAs, almost two bands visit from BsAs per a month?
They are usually accompanied with dancers and singers.
Now they are touring other cities, even Sendai which has only one
tango show last year, has already three, this time.
"Sexteto Sur" will visit this winter and Juan D'Arienzo Orchestra
will visit here ealy next year.
I found out there are several sponsors including a big record company
who invite many bands/dancers from the time that tango was not
popular even among many young Argentines. Many tango clubs are
date to early 60's. I also found out there are many Tango CDs
manufactured in Japan. These are old but quite nice CDs, including
Di Sarli, D'Arienzo, Troilo, Pugliese, Gradel...
Piazzolla is one of the best selling musics other than pops.
This tango boom started just around time I arrived. Tango was alwasy
with Japanese (more pricely with Tokyo) from the Golden age of tango
and they are maybe only sincere lovers of Tango during the hard times.
But now it is like a boom, I saw car comercial featuring Tango dancers.
I can hear Piazzolla almost every day in TV (Dramas, comercials, news..)
Cable TV broadcasted "Forever Tango", which with the movie "Tango Lesson"
was a part of this boom. (But Saura's "Tango" didn't hit this time.
It got quite cold reaction from Japanese Tango lovers.)
Maybe Japan is biggest supporter for BsAs Tango bands, now.
Most of them tour Japan for 1-3 months. In Tokyo, they have tango shows,
parties, master classes from Argentine dancers... unfortunately, I am
not in Tokyo and don't have chance to enjoy this tango boom.
Only one draw back I could think about is, many people think that
tango is what they saw in the show. Last time I visited Tokyo, there was
a master class by young couple Sregio y Gati. After the class, there
were parties including demonstration dance by them. On the floor
there were many Japanese dancers, and some of them doing really
dangerous steps, high boleos and ganchos, fast giros... Some of them
dance as if they are on the stage. (in some club, they explicitly
asked dancers "no gancho or boleo is allowed in this floor")
Now tango is spreading out of Tokyo now. Even here, in Sendai, one
tango circle has been formed recently. Only one practica for a week.
No milonga nor local teacher (a teacher in Tokyo visit here once in a
month), but it is a just a first step.
