The man can tell if the > woman executed what he intended. The woman can feel is she > executed the figure without hesitation and with confidence. That classification doesn't really have much granularity... I know many couples who are satisfied rather easily that a step has been "executed" correctly (and in more instances, men who are satisifed and their dance partner doesn't have the guts to tell them it's not executed correctly). In many cases, the step is "executed" in more than one meaning. Even when both partners end up more-or-less placing their feet roughly as shown by the instructors or the peers without losing balance, that does *not* mean that they've integrated that figure into their dance -- very often, the *energy* and the way the figure flows is not correct. I confess I'm a bit of a maniac on this aspect, as I'm *never* satisfied I do anything entirely right; all too often, I've had to "revisit" figures to really discover new aspects that I had failed to discover earlier. And when you *really* get to know a certain figure, you then discover many, many ways of altering the energy or the flow of that particular sequence and start to play with the idiom... It's not because someone can decipher your writing [1] that you've mastered calligraphy ;). > I just tell the woman "That > didn't work. I wonder what I did wrong." Good strategy -- one I always tend to use. I've discovered that blaming your partner on failures is the most foolproof way to block progress. Also, it invariably reveals yourself as the pompous ass you really are (yes, I've been a pompous ass at times -- and still am, albeit, I hope, less frequently). > Keeping time with music is also important but difficult to > judge, which is why I didn't include it as a measuring stick. While that would be appropriate if we were to discuss tango as a science, this severe reductionism *is* harmful in this context, as what you're reducing away *is* the essence of the dance. I wouldn't be particularly fond of being grouped with a bunched of "advanced" fellows who can't dance to the music but can "execute" (as in capital punishment) lots'o'sequences "correctly". Let me stay on as an "accomplished beginner", then ;;). > WOMEN WANT MEN TO DANCE WITH THEIR HEART, NOT WITH THEIR > HORMONES. Precisely -- and that's just why you can't even begin to classify levels of proficiency accurately, just like it's impossible to judge whether someone is "likeable" by having him fill in a questionnaire. I recently purchased a two CD set: Alfredo De Angelis 40 grandes exitos, "Las Grandes Orquestas del Tango", Maestros del Tango Argentino, BMT 602. The second CD is fine but the first CD has songs on it which are completely different from those listed on the CD jacket. My ear is not that sharp, but I am not sure whether they are even by De Angelis. Would appreciate a second (or many more!) opinion. Regards to all. Nitin Kibe

Hello List, Michael Ditkoff wrote: >WOMEN WANT MEN TO DANCE WITH THEIR HEART, NOT WITH THEIR >HORMONES. I don't know where you get your information about women, but judging by your capitalization it seems to come from a very reliable source. My experience however, is that hormones -played with subtilty and respect- are quite welcome by most women during the dance. I would even go as far as to say that they are an integral part of tango dancing -but then again notice I won't use capitals. I say this especially considering that most people will choose to dance with persons of the opposite sex (if that happens to be their sexual preference). I have occasionally danced with male friends, who I love with all my hart, but the experience has not been quite so intense since I don't feel the need of adding a touch of hormones to it. The same goes to when I dance with my mother, who *owns* my hart. Playing with hormones during the dance requires, besides guts, a lot of sensibility and openness to your tango partner's responses. But I find the same applies for rhythm, direction, strength and all the other elements of tango. Thus: Guts and hormones! (Warning: If one is under the impression that hormones are not something you can keep under control, it's probably not recommendable to allow them any space during the dance.)

Mayby there are people out there who can help me with these three questions. 1) Can anyone provide me with the adress (or e-mail) to the Swiss (I think) record company "El Bandoneon"? 2) Is there a good store for tango shoes in Nijmegen, or should I try Amsterdam instead. (I will visit both cities this summer.) And if there are, how are the prices. 3 I have four tracks (on different tangoCDs) with Hector Varela and I like them very much. However, I have never seen any CDs with him. Can someone tell me if there are any. I prefer instrumental music. Thansk beforehand! Per-Anders Tengland

Date: Mon, 17 May 1999 23:31:56 -0400 From: Melinda Bates <tangerauna @EARTHLINK.NET> Subject: Tango Week in Miami Hello List, My partner and I are getting ready to visit Miami for the first time for next week's tango festival. We are very excited, as it will be our first WEEK of tango instruction. Over two years I have had classes with many of the featured teachers, but having so many classes offered at once seems like a fabulous opportunity. Do any of you have suggestions about how to get the most out of our time without exhausting ourselves? Steve and I dance at different levels, so we may split up for some classes. I am always happy to "share" him (a recent discussion thread here...). We hope to take advantage of the world-class instruction, the nightly milongas (to live music!), the beach right at our door, the salsa in South Beach, and the shows by tango masters. We like to eat in nice restaurants - any suggestions there? (There is a Miami restaurants web site, but it's not very useful.) The embassy of Argentina has been hosting weekly tango classes here in Washington for some months. Now the Ambassador is so excited about this tango week, he is coming to Miami also, to help open the festivities on Sunday. We think that will be good for tango in DC too. The classes at the embassy are really an opportunity to showcase tango to the Washington diplomatic and social communities, people who would not otherwise see or learn tango. The teacher is greatly influenced by Copes. But sooner or later these folks turn up at a milonga and broaden their horizons. That's good for all of us. When we return, maybe I'll have to change my address to "twinkletoes!" (Yes, I know "tangera" is a mis-spelling. It matches my license plate...) Please feel free to respond to me directly, not via the list, unless you think the answers are generally useful. Thanks very much!
