Hello Christel,
I don=B4t know what you found on the net.
In Amsterdam are not any special milonga=B4s but on saturday 12th of
june there is a
party in Utrecht. From 21:30 till 24:00 it is only open for debutants
and so called taxidancers, after that it is open for everyone. Utrecht
is about 60 km from Amsterdam, half an hour by train, trains going
back all night each hour.
Sunday 13th though you should be in the famous Vondelpark: Sexteto
Canyengue will give a free concert there.
hope to see you.

Hola,
It has been brought to my attention that my Women's Class has been
kindly, but incorrectly (incorrect date) posted on a couple of SF Bay
Area lists.
The class is this Sunday, May 16, from 5 - 7 PM, at 449 Powell St.,
3rdFl., SF.
It is $12. This is an ongoing class given like a ballet bar class(tango
bar!), designed for all levels of dancers. Material addressed andworked
on:
balance, embellishments, stretching, giros, music indentification and
interpretation, confindence enhancement, body management. The last
fifteen
minutes are spent on questions from the class about any technical or
social aspect they encounter when dancing. This is a good class for
those starting
out, and an excellent maintenance program for experienced dancers. The
material is consistent and repetitive in the spirit of a ballet class,
crafted to allow a woman to own her technique and use it to express
herself, her body type, her musicality and to feel the enjoyment of
confidence when being able to respond and dance with any and every man.
We have a lot of fun, and the time slot was created to allow us all to
go dancing at the Broadway milonga afterwards.
This will be the last class in May, because Alberto & I will be
teaching in NY and Rhode Island. We will be back in the Bay Area the
first week of June. Our regular Sunday class for couples (and singles)
resumes in that Sunday 5-7 PM time slot at 449 on June 6. That class
will be given on June 13 and June 27(no class June 19 because we'll
teaching in Phoenix). The Women's Tango Bar Class will continue on a
weeknight in
SF, which I will announce in the next couple of days when I firm up the
studio rental.
Also, this Saturday May 15, Planet Tango Milonga at 449 Powell, 3rd
Fl., SF. $5. 10 PM - 1:30 AM. Cheap parking one block away at the
Sutter Stockton Garage.
Surprise performances around midnight. Next Planet Tango Milonga,
Saturday June 26, 10 PM - 2 AM. $5.
There are other places to dance this Saturday. Christy has a breast
cancer benefit (ballroom dancing with some AT) at the Allegro. Visiting
teacher (from Miami) Daniel Lapadula is teaching the class before Gail
Robinson's Dance Easy Milonga in Albany. Stop by on your way home and
end the night with me.
Alberto is in Buenos Aires, and I want to thank of all my Tango friends
for their excellent hospitality and company. I miss him, but I haven't
been feeling desperately lonesome thanks to all of you.
Also these are the last few days to see Daniela & Armando's and Marcos&
Zita's show Tangoing at the Alcazar Theater, 650 Geary. I believe half
price
tickets are being offered. If you haven't seen this show, don't missit.
If you've seen it, see it again. This talented company deserves our
support. No
big backer mounted this show. It was independently (professionally and
beautifully) staged by the company. It hasn't been an easy run for
them, so
let's show them Bay Area tanguero support and send them off on a
highnote.
If you haven't already met these wonderful people and dancers, they
will be stopping by after the show to keep me company on Saturday night
at the
Planet Tango Milonga.
Hope to you see all somewhere sometime soon. If you need to speak with
me, call me at 408.720.9506. Abrazos,
La Mariposa, Valorie

A minority is all you need for a small class. Better dancers shouldn't ha=
ve
to pay more to be in a smaller class. If the beginning and intermediate
classes pull the bulk of the profit, an unprofitable advanced class can b=
e
a loss leader.
Students could book a by-invitation 1-1/2 hour group private, with 5 or 7=
other dancers of similar level and goal. Split the hourly private fee
equally (if you really like the teacher, tack on $2-$5 per person to show=
appreciation and support of the teacher (and the arts!)). Negotiate the f=
ee
with the teacher before class. One much admired visiting teacher whose
hourly is $100, wanted $100 per person! no negotiation! Result? No sale a=
nd
loss of respect by the students. Another pair of teachers were thrilled
with the idea. They felt like they could really connect with the better
dancers in the community. Too the students were guaranteed to rotate to a=
n
equal level partner.
>Another big problem is that many dancers of either gender cannot easily
find a partner to take the class with.
Missing social skills?
>It is also very difficult for the teacher or organizer to control the
level
of skill by those attending or to change partners sufficiently so everyon=
e
gets a decent chance to learn.
Difficult especially in smaller communities for sure, but not impossible.=
(In smaller newer communities I wonder if advanced classes, or even
intermediate, should be offered to the public at all?) What to do for the=
few advanced dancers or small number of local teachers? Have the visiting=
teacher ask them to be unpaid assistants. Ego stroke and validation for t=
he
local teacher (or better local dancer), some connection with the visiting=
teacher, local dancer saves some money and visiting teacher spreads
goodwill.
Some teachers I know watch the class progress, and then match dancers of
similar abilities for certain exercises. Also I've seen teachers split a
group by ability and teach both groups alternately. Then combine groups a=
t
the end of the class.
Too, an organizer could invite better dancers to a public by-invitiation
advanced class, charge the normal class fee to the participants, and
encourage newer dancers to sit and watch the class for a quarter or third=
of the class price. Adapting the Music College Master Class idea to the
classroom, so to speak. Teacher makes a little more per student so can
afford a smaller class size, and newer dancers can get an idea of what la=
ys
ahead without disrupting better students' studies.
And if you are really creative, track where your favorite teacher is
teaching, see if you could fly them to your house for a few days of
mid-week privates between teaching gigs when they are near your location.=
For what one pays for a Tango Week, hotel and airfare, you might be able =
to
fly a favorite teacher to you (pay their airfare), get a few days persona=
l
instruction, make a closer friendship, and spend less.
Too, it seemed that Shirley's and Steve's posts were about financial valu=
e,
which is guaged on a personal scale.

Actually, dancing too or with the music is very easy to see, if the viewe=
r
knows the music. Regardless of the number of figures a dancer displays, a=
nd
their technical expertise, if the figures aren't fit to the rhythm and
melody, it's obvious. I'd replace a lot of your criteria with musicality.=
