Dear Server List, Matej Oresic's comment of 99 May 3, that a good embrace is a must for "leading when the man helps the lady in pivots (ochos, and in particular turns) and in controling the weight changes, by holding her slightly up. I really mean slightly, because this technique doesn't require any special physical strength, but it does require a good embrace, as well as a well grounded lady... This also helps men to keep the posture (it's a must in fast turns) and makes the lead clearer (particularly useful in fast milonga syncopations). Obviously, this technique is harder to apply in a very loose open frame." So true; it is obvious but so difficult for those under 40. Don K.

Date: Tue, 11 May 1999 10:40:09 EDT From: Norberto Alvarez <AlvarezN @AOL.COM> Subject: Re: Video taping workshops I strongly agree with the idea of videotaping workshop. Certainly doing it during the workshop is very difficult but it can be done at the end of the workshop. In a workshop with Fabian Salas we were not allowed to videotape during the workshop however at the end of the workshop some of the advance students repeat the step and we filmed then. Interesting enough not everyone could repeat the information presented inthe workshop. Fabian was still around at this time and we persuaded him to repeat with one student the step presented, mostly information about the counterconsigna, which is hard to understand at first. It was only 10 minutes of exercises, and reviewing the tape is helping me a lot. I think the promoter should ask for this type of help. These teachers are getting good money in USA, I think we have the right to request it and if they refused do not invite them. There are so many good teachers that it would not be difficult to find a few ones that will be sensitive to our needs. The fact is that we do not have models in USA. The milongas here do not have the number and the quality of the dancers as in Bs. As. then it is difficult to learn to much outside workshops and some local teachers. I think if promoters get serious about this issue we will be able to have a hard copy of the material presented.

Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 14:12:00 -0400 From: Michael Ditkoff <Michael.B.Ditkoff @USDOJ.GOV> Subject: Skill Level: Definition of "Correctly Executed" Hello List: I appreciate the animated discussion over my suggested rating system. A number of people wanted to know what I meant by correctly. First, Tango is a dance of passion and can't be reduced to merely steps. (I know instructors who just teach steps and then expect men to lead, usually with disappointing results.) I chose figures as the determining factor for levels because I considered it the easiest factor. Either you can or you can't execute a parada, mordita, etc. Regardless of what you think of your own skill level, if a man can't find the woman's foot for a mordita, he can't do it, period. If a woman can't pivot while doing ochos, the woman can't do ochos, period. Second, my definition of correctly is that the execution feels correct to both the man and woman. The man can tell if the woman executed what he intended. The woman can feel is she executed the figure without hesitation and with confidence. If either the man OR woman have difficulty, the figure hasn't been executed correctly. I'm not going into a "blame game" because that's a definite loser. I just tell the woman "That didn't work. I wonder what I did wrong." More often than not, the woman will be sympathetic and will ask what I wanted and to try again. I appreciate the feedback and the woman appreciates the opportunity to try again. This is a win-win solution instead of finding fault and losing a partner forever. Keeping time with music is also important but difficult to judge, which is why I didn't include it as a measuring stick. I left out decorations because I wanted to emphasize technique. I've seen too many men execute figures women couldn't perform for whatever reason. WOMEN ARE MORE INTERESTED IN TECHNIQUE THAN DECORATIONS!!! That was a surprise to me but that's what my partners tell me. I'm sure most are familiar with the Argentine expression: 4 legs 2 Bodies 1 Heart WOMEN WANT MEN TO DANCE WITH THEIR HEART, NOT WITH THEIR HORMONES. I hope I've answered the questions. The responses have been informative. Now, if there was a way I could get words like parada and mordita through spell check. Michael Ditkoff Washington, DC
