IMHO, this is what it SHOULD be like! But I know that there are many
dancers - even professional dancers - entering the dance for other
reasons. What is nevertheless interesting to observe is that some of
them later discover that yes, what's first is the music.
The music is the soul of the Tango. But when you fall in love with
someone (the Tango), maybe you initially do not know why.

... for me this is very different. In dancing to the music, I hear
more of the subtleties, I participate. I do not notice the crowd
around at all. I am with my partner and the musicians. Dancing to live
music -- and in particular with an orchestra as good as the Sexteto
Canyengue -- is a very different experience than dancing to CDs.
I believe what you say means that you are still very busy (and thus
mentally distracted) in dealing with navigation, collision avoiding
etc.. This will disappear with experience. Eventually, it will not
play a role.

Ladies, read this! First of all, listen to the music!
Good dancing :-)

That 80% figure seems to be a good compromise. Other things I've seen
that usually work are rotations where you always return to your 'usual'
partner after one rotation (so that makes it 50%), and of course,
practicing with other partners *after* the class (but then, of course,
you don't have the teacher at hand to better understand the problems you
may encounter).
Even totally random rotations seem to work pretty well in a setting
where most of the people know each other -- it seems we all know on who
to inflict our dancing once we get to know each other ;).
[Switching to a pure leader's perspective now]
But to be honest, I find it *very* interesting to dance with followers
that are slightly more hesitant than my usual partners -- your incorrect
lead will invariably be exposed more clearly; an experienced follower
has a nasty tendency to always keep her balance ;), and while there are
followers who are alert to 'feeling' when a move feels *completely* OK,
others will silently adjust.
Come to think of it, in this latter respect, there is a tendency with
followers to express vague feelings about "this doesn't feel quite right
HERE" only with the usual dancing partner, and to silently adjust with
others, so that makes totally random rotation hard even when *everyone*
is more experienced.

In my opinion rotating partners is a good thing when you turn up for a class
without a partner, that way at least if you get stuck with someone below or
way above your level or with someone you don't like you will only have to
suffer until the next rotation.
It was also good for my husband and I during a class in Almagro in Buenos
Aires because we got to dance with the locals and meet people to dance with
later on during the milonga.
However, if I'm required to rotate during a workshop and can't find anyone
satisfying, I'll ignore the rule and dance with my husband the rest of the
time.

Subject: "Tangoing" Touring, Daniela & Armando Teaching
I've just heard that the show "Tangoing" is still touring. I really
enjoyed it. At least two of the couples impressed me as the very best
I've ever seen. It has the usual independent set pieces with the usual
themes, which were a lot of fun.
Even more enjoyable, the second half is set in a "practice studio"
with the dancers in street & exercise clothes. Although as tightly
choreographed & well-danced as the first half, of course, it gave
the illusion of peeking behind the scenes, seeing the dancers loosen
up, experiment, & show off some of their specialties.
If you get a chance to see it, don't miss it!

Some (perhaps all) of the five couples are also teaching wherever the
show goes. I have only taken classes from Daniela & Armando, who
organized "Tangoing," so they're the only ones I can comment about.
I highly recommend them. They both speak excellent English, & I
believe that Daniela speaks Italian & Armando French. They've very
clear & organized without being rigid. They focus on essential
technique & simple but useful patterns as well as the more complex &
showier figures that a lot of us love. And they seem to really care
about teaching, & about teaching everyone who comes, even the most
naive beginners & the occasional impatient or clumsy would-be dancer.
