A little geography lesson first. There is tango in Washington,
DC and suburban Virginia and Maryland. There is a tango
hotline (202) 546-2228 x36. Before I give more information, it
would helpful to know:
1) Where is your friend staying (Washington, DC; Virginia or
Maryland)?
2) Does your friend have access to a car (If not, public
transportation is a must? Is (s)he staying near a subway
station?
There are classes and milongas just about every night but not
in the three above locations simultaneously.
No matter how much tango we dance in Washington, we just can't
get enough.

Hi, Brendle. Your one stop for information about tango in the Washington DC
area is the web page of the Capital Tangueros: www.geocities.com/~tangueros
We have a number of very nice events, some excellent resident teachers,
regular visits by tango masters and a devoted group of dancers. We are
happy to welcome visitors. Hope your friend enjoys his visit.

Subject: Follower's Voice In Tango
There are as many styles of tango as there are milongueros and milongueras
doing tango in Buenos Aires.
I had the wildest, most extraordinary dances with milongueras in their
40s-50s.
On the other hand I had a lot of nice,"correct" but ultimately un-special
dances with younger dancers with "good" training. The older milongueras
usually expected and required a firmer lead (hands, arms, lean, etc) than
the younger ones.
It makes me wonder about all the good teachers I have studied with who
patiently corrected my flaws and mistakes. In the end it is the passion,
musicality and emotion that makes tango, not "correctness" of style,
balance, or frame.
The theme of my trip to Buenos Aires this year was to observe and think
about the "Follower's Voice" in Tango.
It is far, far to simplistic to think of this in terms of "decorations,"
because what those older milongueras offered was not simply decorations.
First, what they had was a total involvement in the dance, a give-and-take,
that at times had them almost even back-leading. They definitely broke the
rule that the follower simply follows.
The second point is that Musicality was Queen. They responded to my
musicality, and went flat when I was poorly expressing the music.
The final point is that there was a spectacular amplification of my energy.
When Pugliese was sweet and tender they (we) were intimately sweet and
tender, when Pugliese surged with passion, then they blasted as much oxygen
on the fire as I could pour on fuel.
I noticed that the younger women, even those with superb technique, often
followed perfectly, but usually didn't have much to say.
I raise this for further discussion, because I hear so many complaints that
the follower doesn't get to do much...and I haven't seen this taught very
well. (I'm not even refering to the tendency of so many teachers to
instruct us in text-book figues).

You jest perhaps?
What Kate expressed is very, very effective & beneficial. This one, simple
little mental rearrangement makes a tremendous improvement. Language may
not always be precise, but casting your weight upward captures the image
nicely. (This is not suggesting to be on your toes).

Subject: Tango Congress of Miami Beach, Video
Hola Tangueros:
If you missed the Tango Congress of Miami Beach, that took place April 4th
through 10th of this year, you can enjoy the two hour long video, which is
now available. You have four of the best instructors in Argentine Tango,
showing you individual figures and some of the most difficult ones in slow
motion.
The whole video was filmed with "Digital Cameras" and can be ordered in any
format, by calling Jorge Nel & Marta who were the organizers of the fabulous
Tango Congress of Miami Beach, at (305) 446-9444.
I have no financial gain by sending this notice out, I'm doing it because I
was there and I saw what was being filmed after every class, and it is a
video which should be part of the collection of every tanguero and tanguera
in the world. I ordered one and can't wait until it arrives.
