Date: Wed, 17 Mar 1999 01:42:05 +0000 From: Larry Carroll <larrydla @JUNO.COM> Subject: Tango Awareness It's not quite true, as they say here in Hollywood, that "There's GOOD publicity, and there's NO publicity." But there's a lot of truth in it. I'm perfectly happy that Pr. Charles showed more verve than virtuosity. Speaking of tango awareness, here are two more minor items -- rather like two drops in an ever-increasing rivulet. The latest science-fiction novel (title forgotten) by Poul Anderson, one of the elder statesmen in the field & still very prolific & popular, has a mention of tango in it. It seems a multinational crew of a multiyear mission in space a couple of centuries from now is exploring its ethnic roots as one of several ways to avoid boredom. The Paraguayan captain's contribution is to relearn the tango he learned when young and teach it to others. It's not called the Argentine tango, nor is it described. One of the documentaries nominated for an Oscar is "Dancemaker," which is playing in L.A. It's about famous choreographer Paul Taylor. It includes filming of him & his dancers creating a piece done to an Astor Piazzolla work. It's certainly not tango dancing, but it is a very interesting interpretation of a tango. Date: Wed, 17 Mar 1999 17:18:35 EST From: Arthur Greenberg <AHGberg @AOL.COM> Subject: Tango Congress of Miami Beach April 4th to 10th, 1999 (NFI) Jorge Nel and Marta, his lovely partner, advise me that Tangueros & Tangueras are coming from all over the world to attend this coming Tango Congress (April 4th through 10th, 1999) at the Radisson Deauville Resort in Miami Beach, Florida. The list shows registrants from Japan, Mexico, Costa Rica, Chile, England, Germany, Canada, Switzerland and of course from the USA. Enrollment has been going well. Jorge says he is expecting to have 150 Tango enthusiasts by the time the workshops and milongas begin April 4th, 1999. Jorge wishes to inform you all that the $79 special rate per day at the Radisson Hotel will hold this low price only until March 25th. On the 26th the regular daily rate of $140 will resume. If you wait until the last minute you will face that increased rate which might be a disappointment to you and perhaps more than your budget can take. Reserve your hotel accommodations as soon as possible. The Hotel # is (305) 865-8511. Do not allow procrastination to cost you an extra $61 per day for your hotel stay. If you need any assistance getting your air line tickets call Jorge for help. If for some reason you can not attend the entire week of the Congress call Jorge for help. He will make every effort to accommodate you! If you can only attend a few selected days, phone him so he can assist you in getting the most for your money, and also be prepared for your abbreviated schedule. If you are curious about the curriculum or the teachers who will be presenting the work shops call Jorge. He will inform you as to what you can expect. If you have some questions concerning the Milongas, the music, or anything that pertains to this dynamite Tango Congress, call Jorge. Time is running out! The congress registration fee is $550.....pay by credit card if you choose to. Call Jorge. Phone Jorge or Marta at (305) 446-9444 or Fax (305)447-4534 or E-mail mrtango @bridge.net The sun is shining here in Florida and the beaches are loaded with beautiful sun seekers in bikini bathing suits. Make your Florida visit a real vacation. Come early or stay later. Don't forget your dance shoes. Don't stay home and be left out in the cold. Let this be an event to remember. Meet old friends! Make new acquaintances! Feel the passion of the Tango! Come and learn new ideas; new approaches; get enlightened and inspired by Tango Masters who are among the best in the Tango World. Being in the same room with Armando & Daniela improves my Tango. The Dinzels, Osvaldo Zotto & Lorena, Alicia & Carlos (of Forever Tango) , Gloria & Eduardo. Wow! My cup runneth over.! There is a little note in my Congress flyer that says ... Special Guest "Carlos Gavito". That's icing on the cake. Sincerely, Arturo AHGberg @aol.com West Palm BEach, Florida, USA
