Hi,
Just to say how much I enjoyed Ramiro's comments on the different
interpretations teachers can make of "dancing on the beat"; it made me
become aware of the many ways I myself interpret the rhythms of
different orchestras.
As a "beginner" teacher (one year in the biz) I sincerely recommend his
5 point analysis of the interaction taking place during each step.
However, there is a paragraph on which I could't disagree more:
>You must choose -- dance with the music "by yourself," or block out
>the music and dance with your partner. An awkward dilemma, and I >can't
blame a
>woman who chooses the music. Yet, I think choosing to dance with your
>partner is closer to "tango."
Not in a million years. Tango is a dance -and a traditional one at that!
I believe therefore that music has the absolute priority in guiding both
dancers' movements (This may sound obvious to many, but Ramiro's
observation might represent a widespread opinion as well, and perhaps an
incipient tendency --so who knows a million years could prove us
wrong!).
It is not fair to say that a woman's choices are limited to dancing "by
herself" or following a bad dancer submissively. You will agree with me
that it is essential to the art of leading to be able to convey your
sense of rhythm to your partner, with strength and tenderness
simultaneously. But it is the art of the follower to (precisely between
stages 4 and 5 of your analysis, R.) make her sense of rhythm felt,
giving the finishing touch to the process, and/or taking over "the
rhythm section" when she feels the leader is in doubt. Dancing with
ladies who can do this is for me THE complete dance experience,
particularly when I have difficulties following the beat of a given
orchestra and she can give me the key to understand it! A sublime
communication experience!
A word on learning Milonguero style: Susana Miller.
Sincerely,
Pepito la Chofa

I just signed up, and am new to Tango. Haven't even learned to Tango
yet! I am a musician in San Francisco, and am going to be taking lessons
with my husband soon. We don't know where yet, and I would like to ask a
question. How are the different types of Tango different? Is there one
form that is more passionate than another? Which form is the most
common?
Thanks!

Good evening everybody
>> Dave asked: What is the
>> best milonga of Mtl ?
One criteria one could use is the
most crowded one where there
is a critical mass of tangueros
that has been attained: ( without
being crowded too much )
Using this criteria, I would suggest:
- Studio Tango Montreal on Wednesday night
- Tango Nuestro on Thursday nights
- The Tangueria on Fridays.
- The Tango Libre on Saturdays unless
there is a concert at the Tangueria
to which you may want to attend.
- and Tango Impro Bonheur on Sunday
evenings
Note: It is unfortunate that the heralded
milonga of Montreal ( Graffiti Tango )
has closed down on Sunday nights.
Most of the tangueros in this city hope
that somebody will reopen it again very soon.

Hello :)
It is maybe too early to ask this, but anyway...
A professional dance couple from Yugoslavia is seriously interested
to improve and brush up their knowledge of AT.
Any information regarding plans for tango-workshops by some of
well-known teachers, in any country near Yugoslavia - Italy,
Slovenia, Austria, Hungary, Greece - will be greatly appreciated.
(Germany and Turkey can also be interesting, as an alternative).
Time: June-August this year.
Thank you,
Jovan

listeros and listeras,
A good friend of mine is about to move to Amsterdam (actually, my long-time
partner - sniff). I'd like to hear from anyone and everyone about the
tango scene there - about milongas, classes, teachers, whatever - I'm
listening, on or off the list.
merci,
Daniel

Do you happen to have the dates that Susanna Miller will be
in Atlanta? That's within driving reach for me. My work
schedule often involves weekends, so the more advance
notice I can get on dates, even before other details like
price and exact location), the more likely I am to be able
to go.
Thanks!

In response to comments from "tangazos" to Chan Park:
I don't believe Chan ever said, or even suggested, that he wanted to keep
tango all to himself. (Quite the opposite, actually. Chan works tirelessly
to promote Argentine tango in the Washington, DC/Baltimore area.) My take
on what Chan said is that he doesn't feel elevated in any way by seeing
Argentine tango "demonstrated" by high-profile dilettantes. Exposure is
great, promoting misconceptions isn't. At least Clinton didn't put a rose
between his teeth.

lots of good advice from list members. While surfing the web last night
I came upon a great site for hotel reservations in Argentina for those
willing to pay $40. or more.
www.hotelnet.com.ar
I found great deals on hotels on Avenida de Mayo for around $40.
Thought other list members might like the address.
