You should be able to fix it relatively easily. The following is copied from the current virus list from Norton Anti-VIrus

This worm modifies WSOCK32.DLL to send itself as an attachment when a posting is made to USENET or MAIL. Delete SKA.EXE and SKA.DLL in WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder and replace WSOCK32.DLL with WSOCK32.SKA in WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder.

If you have trouble deleting wsock32.dll because it is in use (like I did) simply do a 95/98 shutdown and choose "Restart the computer in DOS mode. Then you should be able to delete the file from the DOS prompt 1) type CD \WINDOWS\SYSTEM (or the proper directory if it's somewhere else) 2) type DEL WSOCK32.DLL 3) type REN WSOCK32.SKA WSOCK32.DLL That's it! Hopefully, not too many people will have to do this. I've tested my system and everything now seems clean. Obviously, if by any chance I am still infected and there is an attachment to this file, BY NO MEANS OPEN IT!!! (But we're not as stupid as I was to open the file in the first place, are we? ;-) Good luck! He danced at the White House when the president of Argentina came to town. He's associated with the Tango Academy, which I think is part of the Argentine Embassy. The Argentine Embassy's address is 1600 New Hampshire Avenue, NW Washington, DC (don't know the ZIP) (202) 939-6400 Hope this helps.

This warning is very real - not one of the hoaxes sometimes passed along in this list - But if you are unfortunate enough to have run the executable file before you got a warning, the following is an excerpt from one of the sites which contain info on manually removing virus files and repairing your Windows operating system **IF** you ran the Happy99.exe file in Enrico Massetti's message. You should be able to repair the damage without the necessity of reformatting your hard drive As stated in the body - You will not get infected by Happy99 merely by downloading the trojan file. You will have to execute it to get infected. IF YOU HAVE NOT RUN IT - DELETE IT NOW!! - usually you will see a cheesy little fireworks animation if you run it - if you've seen that, you've got it! This is not an endorsement of the software company - this is only one of a number of sites with info on the Happy99 virus (or worm) program, and how to manually repair the damage. Good luck, Danny Waggoner >From Proland Software at their website: http://www.pspl.com/trojan_info/win32/happy99.htm Happy99 is a Win32 based Trojan program. When this program is executed it will display some fireworks. Apart from the fireworks display this program will do some other activity in the background without the user's permission. In the background this program will create two files SKA.EXE and SKA.DLL. It will alter WSOCK32.DLL to put its code into that file and keep the original file as WSOCK32.SKA. It can not modify the WSOCK32.DLL file if it is in use. In such a case this program will add an entry to the Windows Registry to run SKA.EXE the next time the computer is booted so that it can do these modifications. The size of this trojan file is 10000 bytes. You will not get infected by Happy99 merely by downloading the trojan file. You will have to execute it to get infected. The modified WSOCK32.DLL has routines to detect the email and newsgroup postings made by the user. It will send a copy of the SKA.EXE file renamed as happy99.exe to every user or newsgroup to whom the user has sends an email. Each recipient will get the email only once and the trojan will not send repeat email to the same user. It will send a separate email retaining the subject of the first email with the file as an attachment. The trojan also maintains the file LISTE.SKA which contains the list of all email addresses and newsgroups to which this file has been sent. The unique function of this trojan is that it can spread on its own. Happy99 first appeared in January 1999 and it is reported to have affected a lot of users.

Me and my some other tango friends enjoy to have workshop with her. Now, I heard that Susana is going to be in New York city to teach from 6/25 --6/27. Can some one tell me what exactly the workshop schedule, where is the place and what is the price? Also, me and my tango friends in Boston would like to know where we can go for Milonga and outdoor Tango in between 6/25 --6/27. Any information is appreciated and many thanks to you. Asta Chen

Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 19:16:58 +0200 From: Nitin Kibe <NKibe @IFC.ORG> Subject: Tango Travels: Geneva, Lausanne, London Greetings, List. Work took me to Geneva for two weeks and then allowed me to spend Saturday night in London. It was great fun to dance in new locations, listen to new music, see new faces and experience life in a new community, language barriers and all. Some brief impressions. Geneva has something on almost every night of the week. I found Arquebuse on Thursday evenings the most interesting place . This event, free, is held in an apartment in a "squat" -- a building which has been legally abandoned or something similar. A connecting wall between two rooms has been demolished, large mirrors lean against the walls and lit candles are placed at their bases in groups of three and five. The music was good: on my second visit, a visiting bandeonist and guitarist played (there was an impromptu colllection later). On Friday evenings is a milonga at Kap Danse, a local studio, big new floor, good music. As luck would have it, Ricrardo from Rosario did a milonga workshop over the weekend in Geneva, while Cacho did another workshop in Lausanne. Of the two regular events in Lausanne, I could visit only the one organised by Alegria at the Centro Chileno, a restaurant/bar with a dance floor. Nice turnout. Just remember that when you come out of Lausanne train station, you take the metro, which is not a bus or a trolley or an underground/tube/subway but (this being Switzerland) is a funicular. The milonga ends at 12.00 and the last train back to Geneva (a 45 minute ride) is at 12.45 am. Saturday night in London was organised by El Once Club del Tango at the Warren Bar in the Grafton Hotel, 130 Tottenham Court Road, a short distance away from the old location at the Central Club Hotel on Great Russell Street. The bar is large, but rectangular, narrow and long. There is a class before that. Large turnout (150-200+) and very lively but a little crowded for the space. The event ended at 1 a.m., so public transport back to my airport hotel at Heathrow was limited: either all night buses on some routes, black taxis (not very many around) or mini cabs (have someone call one if you are a visitor). A couple, visiting dancers from Tango Pasion, performed too. Back to life in Washington DC now.... Regards to all. Nitin Kibe

Secondly, the software vendors (mainly Microsoft) are delivering their software in "easy to use" configurations that are VERY dangerous to the user, and unless you take steps to educate yourself on why this is so dangerous you will A) become accustomed to using software thusly configured (which makes changing to a safer system harder), and B) eventually contract a virus because your software configuration left you wide open. When that happens, you will only have yourself to blame because you didn't take the time to educate yourself before you got yourself into danger. ObDance: This is like going to a milonga and just walking out onto the floor and trying to ape what other people are doing, rather than taking dancing lessons. You won't learn how to dance correctly, and you will get into trouble, yes? So... Do NOT, EVER, open any executable files that you have received that you didn't *explicitly* request the sender send to you. Most of the recent viruses have been spread via email attachments, and activated by people running those attachments, usually running them automatically. Make sure your email software doesn't automatically open ANY attachments for you. Sure, this makes opening an attachment a bit more of a bother... it's like unlocking your front door to get inside when you get home. It would be less bother to just leave your door unlocked, until the day you come home and your belongings are gone. Lock your front door, and make sure that your software will never automatically run any email attachments. And just as you don't let just any stranger into your house, so you should also not open an attachment that you didn't explicitly expect to receive. If there is any doubt, email back to the sender and verify that they *meant* to send you the attachment, BEFORE you open it to "see what it is". HTH jc
