STOP!!!!
Do NOT forward these "long messages" without first checking them out,
because 99.99% of them are hoaxes, like this one.
The issues that surround this particular issue are very complex. 100% of
the email messages on this topic that are circulating have essential
components of this issue misstated and as such are false and misleading.
If you want to know what the REAL issues are, read:

Subject: Miami Tango congress
Hello list!
This is a LOONG messsage, apologies!
We are recently back from beautiful Miami beach and a fabulous week of
learning,
practicing, dancing, listening to, observing and talking about tango. It
was great!
The hotel is delightful - literally ON the beach. The timing of the week is
excellent, as the hotel, pool, jacuzzi and beach were quiet all week, only
becoming busy on the Sat and Sun of the holiday weekend. We liked our room,
and the refrigerator and safe were nice conveniences. Sometimes we really
were too tired to walk across the street for a meal... We used the jacuzzi
every day to blast at our aching feet and backs. The ocean is perfect -
warm turquoise water, gentle waves. Many of the classes take place in rooms
looking out on the beach, so when the feet and the head said "enough!" it
was easy to head for the sand and the water.
We enjoyed eating and shopping in South Beach, but were astounded at the
number of gorgeous people there. It truly is the land of the thin, the fit,
the tan, the rich, and the very scantily clad. My guess is, if you are over
a certain age (as the French say) you are only allowed to spend a limited
amount of time there before the youth police make you leave.....
The congress was well organized. Three levels of instruction, four classes
each day, ending at 5 pm, dancing each night to a live tango trio. All of
these arrangements went pretty much as scheduled. We were not aware of any
problems with this. I was surprised that the teachers seldom posted the
content of their classes - maybe that is traditional, and we just don't
know. It seemed to me that you would want to know if someone was teaching
milonga or vals.... but actually, it worked out quite well. A few of the
teachers did do this, and there was flexibility to move from class to class
if one wished to. I took intermediate and advanced classes, Steve took
intermediate and beginner. As always, there were plenty of people in the
advanced classes who were barely intermediate dancers....Luckily, most of
them were couples who danced only with each other. For me there was always
enough to focus on that it did not make much difference. Others may have
minded more. As discussed here on the list, there does not seem to be a way
around this.
There was a small gender imbalance, and not all teachers reminded people to
switch during the classes. I "share" Steve when we are in the same class,
and do OK on my own. Actually, my best dance experience of the week (except
for dancing with Fabian Salas) came in a Copes intermdiate class when I
asked a young man to dance and he turned out to be a tanguero from BA who
has been dancing 4 years. We just clicked, and danced the entire two
classes together. He learned the pattern almost immediately and then we
danced it over and over. It was blissful. Maybe some of you know a
better way to express this experience - that unspoken communication when
everything works, and you can lose yourself to the music and the
possibilities of the next steps.... Thank you, Walter, for some fabulous
dancing!
Miami dancers came to some of the classes and most of the milongas. It was
wonderful to meet people I have corresponded with on this list. It was
interesting to me that the level of dance is about what it is in DC. A few
really good, most itermediate.
The teachers at the congress were all outstanding, really fabulous. Because
I am a follower, not a leader, I did not work to memorize any of the
patterns we learned. (Besides, we ordered the video tape...) My focus was
on technique - balance, walking, posture, embellishments. Most of the
teachers focused on this to some degree as well. Lorena and Osvaldo Zotto
began every class by demonstrating a practice of one of these concepts,
something anyone at any level could take home and do. Lorena gave a special
workshop for women on technique and embellishments that was particularly
useful. There was an extra charge for this, and my suggestion for event
organizers is that it should be offered as part of the week - a class for
women and a class for men. Please!
Guillermina and Roberto Reis are stunning examples of how physically small
people can dominate a space with their elegance and precision. The most
useful lessons from them came from watching him on the dance floor. A world
class dancer and choreographer, he danced soooo slowly and tenderly, it was
exquisite. No flashy moves, no fantasy tango, just the most beautiful salon
tango you could imagine.
Fabian Salas I have known for two years. He seems to me to be not only a
better dancer each time I see him, but a better teacher as well. He is
thorough and attentive to all the students. (If you are in LA for his
upcoming visit, don't miss this opportunity!) I am excited that next year's
tango congress in BA (which he organizes) will take place in February, a
month when such a trip may be possible for me. During the incredible show
on the last night of the congress, Fabian's second dance was my favorite
because while all the couples danced fabulous show tango, his dance was
really only slightly exaggerated salon tango, with moves anyone might know,
but performed with such grace and skill that it left us speechless. He is
truly brilliant.
Our classes with Fernanda Ghi and Guillermo Merlo were my favorites. They
constantly encouraged even the stiffest gringo students to feel the music,
to embrace their partner closely, to move together gracefully. At one point
when Fernanda was exhorting us to get closer, closer, CLOSER I blurted out
the old Groucho Marx line - If I get any closer to him I'll be BEHIND him!
I particularly enjoyed their class on milonga. They both have unusually
sweet and open dispositions, and the fact that they are beautiful and
clearly in love made them a delight to be around. They are also thorough
and effective teachers, and passionate and stylish dancers. Since they now
live in Miami, maybe they will be available to visit more cities in the
coming year for workshops.
This was my first opportunity to meet Daniel Trenner. What a wonderful
teacher he is. I was deeply impressed by his knowledge of the history and
culture of tango as well as his surprising humility. In one class he
explained that he would be teaching technique during the week, not patterns
of steps. The reason was that in his opinion, for an American he is right
at the peak of tango dancing and teaching, but the other teachers, as
Argentines, were so far above THAT level, that it would be foolish for him
to teach what they do so brilliantly. Steve took every class with him that
he could, and I believe it really changed his dancing. (I hope he will
write separately about his experience as a relative beginner.)
Of course the greatest honor of the week was to be around and take classes
with Juan Carlos Copes. He taught with his daughter Joanna, and it was a
wonderful experience. I do think most of what he taught was really
choreography, and I don't think you would see these complicated patterns on
the dance floor, but even just observing him teach was very interesting.
After one year of working on the lightest possible touch for following, when
I danced with him he would reprovingly shake my right hand and say
"stronger, more resistance" (I hope my former dance partner reads that...)
Joanna at age 20 is clearly set to be the tango equivalent of prima
ballerina. At one point I peeked into his advanced class, where he was
counting off the steps to the pattern. By the time he got to "24" hardly
anyone in the class was still with him. I think it ended around 36....
well, it was an ADVANCED class!
The competitive event was most interesting. Six couples competed. Before
you complain to the list about how there can be a competition of Argentine
tango, refer back to Randy's message a few months ago. He said he
understands the angst this raises with tangueros, but the reality is that
competion is ALREADY happening. That leaves two choices: do nothing and
allow the ballroom folks to take it over (and just imagine what that would
mean), or, do it in the Argentine tango community, with judging by JC Copes,
Fabian Salas, Lorena, Osvaldo, Daniel, Roberto Reis. That is why this
competition took place.
One couple were virtual professional ballroom dancers. Very polished,
dramatic presentation, about 95% ballroom, 5% Argentine tango. They came in
LAST. Another couple were equally professional, but more balletic. Lots of
aerials, a routine that made me think of ice dancing, also about 95%
something else and 5% tango. They came in next to last. One couple from
Montreal were just dancers in the intermediate and advanced classes with us
all week. Their dancing was A. tango, but it was without passion or
precision or much of interest - just average salon tango. I admired their
spunk for entering! I think they were fourth. I don't remember third. The
top two couples were really wonderful. Second place went to a young man of
16 with a partner of 13 who danced with great style, elegance and passion.
Really nice show tango, and amazing for their ages. They could easily have
been first - they were authentic. The winners were a man in his 40s with a
younger lady who also danced real A Tango with style, elegance and passion
(we need more words for this dance!) They were gorgeous. I understand he is
a teacher. I hope Randy will supply the names of these people for the list
now.
So, clearly, the Argentine judges were sending a message - this is NOT
ballroom. This is ARGENTINE tango, we are the keepers of this tradition and
culture and we will not allow anyone to co-opt or subvert it. I respect
them tremendously for that, and we should all be grateful. If I want to
dance ballroom, I know where to go to learn it. I'm not interested. My
passion is Argentine tango, and I'm grateful to anyone who works to make the
tango community stronger.
On Sunday we had the pleasure of joining Juan Carlos in celebrating his
birthday. He told me all about coming to the White House to dance tango for
President Reagan's birthday in the 1980s..... (I'm the person who brought
Pablo Veron to the White House in January to dance for President Clinton and
President Menem.)
We understand vaguely that this second tango congress in Miami came about
because of a split in their tango community. We are sorry for that, as
conflict and division are bad for "growing" the tango communities.
Nevertheless, we have never been able to attend the tango week at Easter, so
this scheduling was perfect for us. It appears to have been a success for
the organizers too. Randy and Lydia did a great job of welcoming us and
running a trouble free (at least for the dancers) week. We are very
grateful for their hard work, and can't wait to go back next year. We
believe we both improved our dancing measurably. It was well worth it for
that, and, besides, was a wonderful vacation.

Fabian is an excellent dancer and a wonderful teacher, but he's taught
in L.A. before. We were fortunate enough to study with him in 1992, when
Alberto Toledano & Loreen Arbus brought him to L.A. for a weekend workshop.
His partner in those days was Cynthia Wraspir. Afterward, we all went to
Norah's Place for dinner & dancing--it was wonderful!
Brian & I had been dancing tango less than a year at that point, and it
made quite an impression. We recommend his classes highly.
