produced, but inspiring. you won't learn steps, but see how they move.

Norte=F1o is a tango nuevo quintet based in Ottawa/Hull (Canada), =
consisting of Pierre-Paul Provencher (bandoneon), Laurie Rosewarne =
(piano), Sylvie Rocheleau (violin), Garry Elliott (guitar), and =
Nicolas Tremblay (couble bass).
We will be performing at the Panamerican Games in Winnipeg (Canada) =
on July 27 on the open-air stage at The Forks. The program consists =
of works by Astor Piazzolla.
We were invited to perform at this event by the Argentinian Embassy =
in Canada. We have also received a travel grant from the Conseil des =
Arts et des lettres du Quebec (CALQ).

Dear list, here is a question I have not seen addressed here:
We recently had a wonderful class with visiting teachers Chicho and Cecelia.
The content was interesting and it was well taught. We greatly admire their
dancing (and if you don't, I think we have already discussed that to death.)
In one way their class is very similar to any class at that level. Both men
and women pay the same for the class. But the content of the class is aimed
90% (or more) at the men. This class was not steps, it was about changing
direction and rhythm, and it was most useful. However, the class was really
all about teaching the men how to execute and lead these moves. I can
recall only one instance of advice about style being briefly offered to the
women. So there we are, having paid the same, patiently working with the
men while THEY learn to execute and lead.
I'm happy to make a contribution to helping the men dance better. After
all, this is my dance community too. I want them to dance as well as
possible. But it sometimes seems as if we are relegated to the status of
crash test dummy in these situations. Even in classes where steps/patterns
are being taught, it is still not to the women. We don't need to learn the
steps/patterns; we need to become good FOLLOWERS, so that we can follow
whatever is lead, whether or not we have seen it before. I will often
concentrate on the man's part simply because I want to help my partner learn
well, and remember. But what is supposed to be in this for the women? I
love the moves we learned this week, but it would have been very easy (and
cost nothing) for me just to follow a man who can lead them. I did not need
to invest 2 hours and $30.
(I can't emphasize enough that this is NOT a criticism of Chicho and
Cecelia. The content of their class was wonderful. They are simply a
current example of a constant experience.)
It seems that if women want to learn for ourselves we must take a special
workshop on balance, posture, precise execution of our steps, sensitive
following, etc. I'm happy to do this, and have learned a lot from such
workshops. But you don't see men there, having paid like us, and then just
supporting us as we walk and practice.
Is this how it always is? Is it a reasonable system? I look forward to your
responses.

My opinion regarding Chicho has already been expressed i.e. I don't think
he's so good and I think the quality of the teaching is part of that.

Thats how Chicho dances in my opinion so it is no surprise that he teaches
that way.
A good couple should teach relevant info to both leaders and followers.
Unfortunately the reality that the men learn many more steps than the woman
is an inextricable part of tango. We can do many different steps around your
basic ochos for example. But there is plenty that can be offered to followers
and should be. All that you mentioned about posture, balance, precision of
steps, etc could be dealt with at the same time. When Florencia Taccetti and
Julio Mendez were recently here in NYC they did exactly that. Equal amounts
of time were spent with the women and men. Then we practiced the steps
together.

I disagree, I think it should be. It is a valid criticism. It's your money in
his pocket.
