A ballroom dancer of my acquaintance, in trying to garner my interest in him
romantically, tried to entice me to accompany him to a ballroom dance
competition by telling me there was an Argentine tango competition included.
I told him, no, that Argentine tango dancers don't compete.
I now have the brochure in front of me, and yes, on Thursday, September 6th
at the Fontainbleu Hotel in Miami, there will be a World Professional
Argentine Tango Championship. The objective of this championship,(according
to the brochure) is to determine the most outstanding Argentine Tango
dancers in the world for 1999. First prize is $1500.00.
His idea was that I could teach him some Argentine Tango (he has already
competed in American Tango) and then we could get a routine choreographed
and compete together - maybe not this year, but next year.
This competition will most likely be televised, further confusing people.
So now what do we tell people? And another question - who will be competing
in Miami in September?

Lately I've found myself getting frustrated and annoyed by the number of
non-dancing people I meet who ask me if the reason I'm going to a tango
workshop, or a milonga, or Nijmegen, or Buenos Aires is TO COMPETE. Their
only exposure to tango is probably ballroom competitions on television. I
feel impatient with their ignorance, and I don't want to be. Any
suggestions about how to gently and briefly respond (and maybe even raise
their consciousness a little)?
Thanks for your thoughts.

Subject: Re: because it feel good
Hello L,
Majority of the ballroom competitors don't expect to win or need to
show-off. They all know that championships are it's rigged politically
and they can get the positive feed-back from just showing-off at a local
disco. I've never seen any of these dancers taking offense at the movie
"Strictly Ballroom." Instead, they all see the folly of it and laugh
harder because they know the truth of it.
The ballroom dancer get their "rush" from being on the edge of trying to
do the impossible much like a gymnast, figure skater, bowler or golfer
trying for the perfect game. I've seen some of these same dancers work
for three hours straight in practice with very few people watching and no
awards when the only enjoyment they get are from how close they get to
their idea of perfection.
I've been to zydeco dances where the steps are simple and the patterns
are few. But they do their dance really fast. After watching I noticed
that alot of the dancers are also long distance runners and they're
starting to get a glassy-eyed stare. Is their drug this "runners high"
I've heard about? Are there other dances that ellicit this drug? How
about fast waltz, polka ....etc?
Maybe there is another drug released in dances with heavy physical
contact that just might make that dance addictive. Dirty dancing, the
grinding in zydeco, the high school grope, lambada........., tango?
Primitive possibly, but who's to say it's wrong.
I think every dance has a drug to offer and everyone has their drug of
choice. You have yours so why not give the ballroom dancers theirs.
Steve

Subject: Only slightly tango related bur important Free Speech issue,
for SF Area especially
The first listener-supported radio station in the US, KPFA in Berkeley in
undergoing a crisis. KPFA is almost the only station in the Bay Area that
has aired programs on Argentine tango (except Alberto Paz' program some
years back on La Grande 1010). It is the only major outlet for world music
of all kinds, and is, or has been, the strongest bastion of free speech on
the airwaves. In my opinion, KPFA epitomizes the First Amendment.
Just now the staff of KPFA has been locked out and the news directors
arrested, by the management of the Pacifica foundation, under whose auspices
KPFA operates. Other Pacifica stations include KPFK in Los Angeles, KPFT in
Houston, WPFW in Washington , DC, and WBAI in New York.
There will be demonstrations today, Saturday, and tomorrow in front of
the station, 1929 Martin L. King Jr Way, at University Ave in Berkely, CA
from noon to 5 pm. Monday night a benefit concert will be held for the KPFA
staff, by Joan Baez and Dar Williams, at 8 pm at the Berkeley Community
Theatre. For more information, try website www.savepacifica.net (I
haven't had a chance to look at it--it's probably wild)
Hoping that this can be sent on the Tango-L, we send abrazos to all with
hopes for the continuance of free speech in California, the US and the
world.

LOIS WROTE: A ballroom dancer of my acquaintance, in trying to garner my

I will expand by quoting a recent article on multiple subjects related to
A.Tango by BARBARA GARVEY.
"SYLLABI AND STANDARDS" " this concept would rule out standardized
competition, probably making Argentine tango ineligible for world-level
ballroom contests.
Tango contests have nevertheless been held for over 100 years. Every
well-known milonguero loves to tell tales, tall or short, of triunfs; they
are specially fond of trophies. However these competitions never employ
elaborate rules or standards; but are gauged subjectively by judges chosen
without predetermined quqlifications. Milongueros world-wide hold an almost
universal distaste for the idea of a tango Syllabus with an "official"
program of study and specific criteria."
I hope that this will help to clarify this subject.

Subject: LAMPAZO - A painful clarification
I wrote yesterday, " RUTH, ( why you should not quit taking tango lessons)
When I started dancing tango in 1993; I went to a club in Buenos
Aires, situated in the neighborhood of Villa Urquiza; LAMPAZO WAS THE
INSTRUCTOR one of the few old tangueros still around. The first lesson was
on WALKING, this was followed by about one week of walking exercises.
Today I received an E-Mail from Planet-Tango to notify me that Lampazo died
recently.( less than two months ago ).I did not know.
I grew up in Villa Urquiza, a neighborhood well known for the number of
excellent tango clubs and great tango dancers.
LAMPAZO was one of the greatest dancers of all times. He taught for many
years at the "Sin Rumbo" club, and more recently at the "Suntherland".
He was one of the founders of the Sin Rumbo; a peculiar name, ( something
like "without direction"; Lampazo and other three milongueros went to the
horse races; they won a considerable amount of money by placing bets for a
horse whose name was; guess what? "Sin rumbo"; they decided to found a tango
club with the money.
He was a great dancer and embodied all the attributes of the good tango
dancer; elegant in attire and posture, although he was not very tall he had
a lot of PINTA, he danced a walked, elegant tango.
Another great Tango dancer that disappears. He leaves a big empty space. We
all will remember him with affection and respect.

Subject: Re: TANGO-L Digest - 16 Jul 1999 to 17 Jul 1999 Healthy Addictions
I noticed several posts about tango addictions. There have been so
many that I can't find the particular one I wanted to respond to. In it
someone noted that the word addiction has negative connotations. As a
psychologist by day and dancer by night, I wanted to put in my 10 cents
worth. Yes, most addictions are unhealthy. However, we now know that regular
exercise is addictive. If you are used to exercising on a regular basis and
miss a day, you may be grumpy and hard to get along with when you don't get
your "fix". It seems we have "withdrawal" symptoms from regular exercise.
Exercise stimulates the production of endophins in the brain which make us
feel good, just like drugs do. When I am helping someone to get over an
addiction to drugs or alcohol, I encourage them to start exercising to help
them overcome the addiction.
Dancing, A Tango, Swing or folk dancing, which is my favorite form of
exercise because of the social aspect, can therefore be a very healthy
addiction. I guess you have touched on one of the reasons that I got involved
in finding ways to help people find partners-the place where dance and mental
health intersect. I feel it is one of the best and healthiest ways for people
to meet and actually found the man I am dating through dance. The more people
have in common the more likely their relationship will grow & prosper. So
keep dancing and do talk with the people you meet on the dance floor.
