Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 10:23:38 -0500 From: Robinne Gray <rlg2 @CORNELL.EDU> Subject: Ithaca Tango Winterfest: online maps I won't send out another full announcement about this weekend's winterfest in Ithaca, NY, but since we have so many people coming from other cities and Canada, I wanted to point out the following helpful resources: Ithaca maps: http://www.ithaca.ny.us/ Click on "About Ithaca", then "Maps." Cornell campus map (to find Statler Auditorim): http://www.cornell.edu/CUinfo.html See "Campus Maps" under the heading "The Cornell Campus" NOTE: Campus parking can be a bear, so allow ample time. For those coming to the Friday evening performance, I recommend the parking garage next to the football stadium, Schoellkopf Field. It's a chilly but brief walk to the Statler. Parking space is plentiful at the Montessori school on Sat & Sun. Ithaca weather from Cornell meteorology: http://www.cornell.edu/Ithaca/Weather.html Safe travels.... --Robinne

Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 10:24:31 -0600 From: Stephen P Brown <Stephen.P.Brown @DAL.FRB.ORG> Subject: The DJ Several milongas I attended over the past month have led me to believe that the DJs role at a milonga is poorly understood--and even by many who accept that role. At the milonga I liked the most, it seemed as though the DJ was always playing just the right music. In retrospect, I think he did more than simply play a mixture of the best tangos, milongas and valses for dancing. Early in the evening, he was playing tangos that had simple and clear rhythms. I think this helped to educate the dancers to the rhythm. He played music with more challenging rhythms late in the evening. In fact, he even slipped Gideon Kremer's recording of (Astor Piazolla's) Oblivion into the late night play list. I think he was also sensitive to the energy of the room, switching the orchestras and sounds so the music always seemed fresh to our ears and feet. At three other milongas, it seemed like the music was simply mixed. The quality of these efforts was uneven, but none were as good as the first I describe. At one milonga, the DJ relied heavily on a play list that was described as the most frequently played tangos in Buenos Aires. The result was fairly good because it eliminated poor choices, but there seemed to be no inspired chocies either. I enjoyed dancing to each piece of music, but at the end of the evening, I did not feel that I had heard or been able to dance in a satisfying progression to the music. It did not seem like the DJ was ever really in touch with the room. At a another milonga, the DJ used lengthy preprogrammed tapes. Although the set of tapes contained good music, it seemed as though the DJ was never quite able to match the mood of the room. It also seemed as though the tapes might have been played in a different order than was originally intended because the tape of late evening music seemed to come on very early. At a fourth milonga, the DJ was played late-era Pugliese, Calo and Troilo, as well as Piazolla quite heavily early in the evening, and D'Arienzo, Di Sarli and early Pugliese quite heavily late in the evening. From my observations, most of the dancers seemed befuddled about or oblivious to the rhythm througout most of the evening. --Steve de Tejas
