For me, dancig tango in the street has something irresitible.
I remember, the night after my first tango lesson ever (with Miguelangel
Zotto :)), I was invited to a party. At a certain point during the evening,
I went out on the balcony, and looked down on the street. By the orange
light of roman streetlamps, in the middle of parked cars, there was a
couple doing tango.... it couldn't have been a coincidence!
Last summer in Germany, too, we had an improvised milonga on the concrete
pavement of the shopping zone of the town. I remember a police car passing
by several times, watching us and not knowing if to stop us or just those
fools (us) play.....
Ciao,
Susanna.

Try the "Romance de Barrio" CD (El Bandoneon EB 058) with Troilo and Floreal Ruiz
for a vocal rendition of Palomita Blanca, or "Buenos Aires by Night" (EMI 1487)
with Hector Varela for an instrumental version. Both versions are wonderful.

The babies in the commercial were good natured cherubs. However, having spent a few
years waiting for each of my three infant sons to outgrow their car seats, the
commercial I envisioned had shrieking, colicky babies in the back of the car. Given
that scenario, the two drivers seeking respite would have stopped traffic in both
directions, cranked up the volume on "Palomita Blanca," offered free tango lessons
and organized a milonga on the spot for the gathering crowd.

I agree that there can be tango moments without any dancing. A visit to some
milongas in central Illinois will readily confirm this. However, metaphysical tango
is not for me. I prefer the genuine article: a real tanguera in my abrazo.

Hello,
I got to visit one of the local Tango scenes in Frankfurt Germany last
Friday. (Thanks to the people who sent me some webpages info for
Frankfurt).
The place I visited was the "Lehrerkooperative" on Wasserweg 30, in
Frankfurt. This place is apparently a cooperative of Tango teachers
in Frankfurt. I found the people there to be very friendly to visitors.
We danced there from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Then, I was invited to
come to another Tango place, in Hochst (with a umlaut over the
"o"). The address there was Bolongarostr. 113. It was not
mentionned in any of the webpages I had checked for Frankfurt.
According to some of the locals, there are many such Tango places
not mentionned on the Internet.

Hello Jaques,
All the places where to dance in Frankfurt are listed on my
Cybertango Webpages:
http://www.informatik.uni-frankfurt.de/~garrit/tango/tangoffm.html
(Tango in Frankfurt and Rhein/Main area)
also the place in Frankfurt-Hoechst (called Tango Bar).
The pamphlet you geathered in Hoechst is also made by me and
contains (allmost) the same info which I give in my webpage
about Frankfurt.

The preferred style of Tango I saw there was "Fantasia" although
the pamphlets I gathered offered also lessons in "Salon style".
(As well as Milonga, Vals, Flamenco and Salsa/Merengue)
Three people from the "Lehrerkooperative" commented to me that
the style I danced was different from what they usually dance in
Frankfurt. (My Tango lessons were in "Salon style".)
I do not know if it's because "Salon style" is not danced much there or
if it's because my Tango is so rusty that it's not recognizable as:
"Salon style" . :-(

Well, I don't really agree with you that most people dance 'fantasia'
here. I for myself dance what the local teacher call 'Salon Style'
which is by most people refered as 'Milonguero style' -
but nameing styles is difficult, since everyone has a slightly
different idea of how things should be named, even if the things
they do are very similar.
If people didn't recognize your dance style it might be, because
lots of people don't really categorize the tango here - they
just dance it. Too bad we didn't talk that evening, since I have
been on that milonga too.
Fantasia for me means, very open dance hold, lots of flashy figures.
Most of the intermediate and advanced dancers here have a close dance
hold, and I myself never seperate from the woman while
dancing - I enjoy the possibilities of leading with your body
far and too much the communication you can have with your partner
this way.
If you stay here for some more days, we might meet in once of the
milongas and discuss this a little further :-)
Enjoy the Tango,
Garrit

Subject: Palomita Blanca
The thread about the Volkswagen commercial interested me as the piece
of music was particularly nice and I love the Vals anyway. Nosing
around in my collection of tango CDs I found three versions of
Palomita Blanca. The earliest that I have is on the "Carlos Gardel 100
A=F1os" album, Capitol Records, H2H-42387. Next was on "Romance de
Barrio" Anibal Troilo con Floreal Ruiz, El Bandoneon, EB-CD 58. Then I
found a fairly contemporary and very nice version by Francisco Varela
on a compilation titled "The Story of Tango", Hemisphere/Metro Blue,
7243 8 55646 2 8. I would love to know what version was actually used
in the commercial. The Varela version sounds very close. Ciao......

To my ear, this version sounds a) new, and b) not quite 'tipica', at least in
terms of balance and mix. If the music was not recorded specifically for the
commercial, then I suspect that some talented engineers seriously re-worked an
existing recording.
BTW, I think the commercial is very clever, with it's sepia video and many
levels of interpretation/suggestion.
Regards to all,
Frank - Mpls.

Another version is by Ignacio Corsini (1929) on the El Bandoneon label (EBCD 89) "La
pulpera de Santa Lucia".
Rafael Rossi also recorded a rustic version of Palomita Blanca. I don't know if it's
available on CD.
