Subject: VW commercial
Hi List-
Volkswagen is currently airing a commercial for the VW Passat on American TV,
and the music that 'drives' (pardon the pun) the commercial sounds like a
Tango to me. Can anybody identify it? The commercial shows two people, a man
and a woman (of course) driving down the road, each in their own car,
exchanging Tango eyes and in the end they are interrupted by their children
who are sitting in the back seat.
Also, all the talk of the new show 'Tangoing' in San Fran is really making me
jealous. Any chance that it may go on the road and come to the Detroit area?
Thanks,
Kathy

Subject: Matej & Robinne's workshop
For all the people who said their coming and didn't, you missed one of the
most exciting workshop I have put on in Cleveland.
Matej's knowledge of the tango is precise and exact. Everyone understood
everything he tried to convey to us and the classes went swiftly, but the one
class I felt made Matej stand out over every one else we had in Cleveland was
the 4th class, Musicality.
Even in my ballroon classes I have attended, no one ever tried to just teach
how to interpret the musicand react with our bodied, as Matej did. This class
could have been for any dance student not just Tango. I see so many
instructors teach dance steps, but matej also taught us how to listen the
music and react to our interpretation of it.
Bravo Matej.
We will be bringing Matej & Robinne back to the Cleveland area soon, and
highly recommend to any promoters to conceder bring Matej & Robinne to their
area.
I only wish I was able to put in print my true feelings of how well this
workshop went and my love I have for Matej and 'Robinne.
Next week Matej and Robinne will be haveing a tango extravganza, in Ithica,
New York. I'll be there, try to come too.

The song featured in the VW commercial is "Palomita Blanca," a tango vals.
Wouldn't it have been a more interesting commercial if the man and woman had
exited their vehicles and danced in the street for a moment before driving off
again? This might have started a new trend: the Argentine fire drill. Cars stop
for red traffic lights, and people suddenly jumping out for a quick tango.

Returning from practice recently, the drawbridge back to Portland
(Maine) was open. (This delay was clearly caused by my thinking, as I
came to practice "Gee, I've never seen this bridge open.") After a
few minutes of twiddling our thumbs, my friend in the car behind me
hopped out, knocked on my car window, persuaded me to get out (not
hard, for anyone who knows what a tango fiend I am!), and we danced a
few measures next to the car (to the music of our hearts, since I had
no tango tape with me). Then back to our cars, hopefully leaving
several mystified and intrigued drivers around us.
Last Thanksgiving, the last-Friday dance at Spontaneous Celebrations
in Jamaica Plain (Boston) was cancelled on short notice. (Just for
that night -- it's alive and well still.) I was supposed to meet a
friend there, and had come by public transportation, so had little
choice but to sit forlornly on the steps waiting. A few people came
by; "No-one's here"; and they left. A few more people came by and
stopped to commiserate about the vanished dance. Another person
arrived, with a CD player and batteries. AHA!
We put the CD player on the steps, and danced. Occasionally a car
would come up the narrow street; we danced over to the curbs, let
them pass, and then took over the road again. Magnificent!

Thanks, Tom, for naming the vals. Though it's such a familiar one, I couldn't
find it on any of my CD's.
My husband Marc, who doesn't dance, told me there was a VW commercial with a
tango vals. (I was proud of him for recognizing it.) And he told me the whole
exchange between the man and the woman at the traffic light is like a tango.
So I saw the commercial and I agree with Marc - it was already a tango without
their having to dance. When you have your baby in the back seat, you don't get
out of the car and dance with someone else's spouse who has their baby in the
back seat, though I think that kind of thing happens in Finland. Tangos happen
in life even when you're not dancing. I think the commercial was written by
someone who understands and dances tango.

Helaine

No tango tape? Sharon: driving around without tango tapes or CDs in the car is
unacceptable behavior for true tango fanatics. How can we expect to indoctrinate
unsuspecting hitchhikers or other captive passengers in our vehicles if we fail to
have tango music immediately at hand?
At least offer some excuse for this lapse. Like maybe, you lent your tapes to Daniel
Trenner at the last workshop and he hasn't returned them yet.

I used to torture my riders in the casual carpool with tango and found that
about 1 in 4 riders liked tango. I even had a rider who took up AT after
riding with me.
(For those of you outside the San Francisco Bay Area, the casual carpool is
where riders queue up at certain designated places for drivers to pick up
in order to qualify for the carpool lane across the San Francisco Bay Bridge.
The riders benefit by a free ride into the City and the drivers benefit by
saving time and the bridge toll since carpools cross for free.)

In defense of my fanatical name :-), I have to say that I did have
tango CDs in the car (for the practice), but my car has no CD player.
For the car Tape player, I had a Spanish study tape and was
blamelessly doing my Spanish homework when James knocked on my car
window for a dance. But maybe a true fanatic would have simply
cranked up the volume and danced to the impassioned prose of "What is
this? --That is a book. And this? --That is a table."
Can I have my fanatical laurels back if I promise to make some tango
tapes to keep in my car all the time?

Subject: About Tango in Frankfurt (Main) Germany
Hello,
I got to visit one of the local Tango scenes in Frankfurt Germany last
Friday. (Thanks to the people who sent me some webpages info for
Frankfurt).
The place I visited was the "Lehrerkooperative" on Wasserweg 30, in
Frankfurt. This place is apparently a cooperative of Tango teachers
in Frankfurt. I found the people there to be very friendly to visitors.
We danced there from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Then, I was invited to
come to another Tango place, in Hochst (with a umlaut over the
"o"). The address there was Bolongarostr. 113. It was not
mentionned in any of the webpages I had checked for Frankfurt.
According to some of the locals, there are many such Tango places
not mentionned on the Internet.
The place Hochst was actually closer to where I was staying in
Eschborn making it cheaper for me to go by Taxi. I was therefore
very interested in finding out about it.
Two of the ladies from the "Lehrerkooperative" gave me a lift there.
It was a nice room about the size of the "Tangueria" in Montreal but
with a higher ceiling, and no supporting beams in the center. The
room was pretty much smokeless (a welcome change from some of
the smoke-filled rooms I sometimes attend, in Montreal).
The ceiling also had chandeliers and a Disco ball.
The preferred style of Tango I saw there was "Fantasia" although
the pamphlets I gathered offered also lessons in "Salon style".
(As well as Milonga, Vals, Flamenco and Salsa/Merengue)
Three people from the "Lehrerkooperative" commented to me that
the style I danced was different from what they usually dance in
Frankfurt. (My Tango lessons were in "Salon style".)
I do not know if it's because "Salon style" is not danced much there or
if it's because my Tango is so rusty that it's not recognizable as:
"Salon style" . :-(
It was fortunate for me that the people I spoke with spoke English
better than I spoke German. In some instances, they even used
some French words.
I enjoyed my evening, dancing with several ladies and even got
to dance a Salsa at the end of the evening. (Although in the
middle of the song, we switched to Milonga we referred to it
as: Salonga. )
To the people wanting to go to the "Hochst" place, it is
within walking distance of the "Lindner Congress Hotel".
(Taxi drivers will know where it is). I walked in there
at the end of my evening and asked the reception if they
would be kind enough to call me a cab. This hotel has a
webpage: http://www.lindner.de
For the people on this list, here are three new links for Tango in
the Frankfurt area:

http://www.informatik.uni-frankfurt.de/~garrit/tango/geo/ball.html
I got these links from the pamphlets of information I gathered
at the place in Hochst. I plan to add them to my own collection of
Tango links when I return to Montreal.
Best regards, & Alles Gute !
