She is a violinist in a Argentine tango band, & she dances the tango with her boyfriend. I've been looking forward to this film, but so far I haven't seen any mention of it in the US. Does anyone know if it has been (or will be) released here? Larry de Los Angeles http://world.std.com/~larrydla P.S. The directors name is Andre Techine, with accents over the letter E's. How is his name pronounced? ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. My trip to Japan is back on this year: I'll be in Kyoto, Tokyo, & a few smaller cities between April 2 & 22. Does anyone know of any tango in Japan, or have any emailable contacts who might? Please reply off-list. Domo arigato, Kate :) San Francsico

Date: Fri, 19 Feb 1999 14:28:15 -0800 From: Kate Withey <withey @SFO.COM> Subject: Montreal tango scene There've been a few things on the list about Montreal lately, & I've been meaning to contribute. (I especially wanted to counteract the negative response by one woman some time ago about dancers there.) I was there for 10 days last July for the workshop Daniel Trenner put on in conjunction with the local Montreal teachers. THE MONTREAL TANGO SCENE: The quantity & quality of dancing in Montreal are both wonderful. People were extremely friendly, & men were open to women asking them to dance -- in fact, I wished I'd gotten up my nerve sooner! I would enthusiastically recommend anyone to visit the city, & to try out its several (!!) dedicated tango clubs. THE WORKSHOP: Overall, it was *terrific*. (So good, in fact, I haven't danced since, but that's another story....) Particular pros: Long enough to really get into it, a full 8 days of classes (none of this 5-day "week"). Emphasis (like all Trenner workshops) on partnering & exercises that REALLY help one's understanding of the ways two bodies can communicate & move together in the shape of a tango -- stuff we ALL should work on (especially those "advanced" dancers who think they don't need it!). Great line-up of teachers (my favorite: the fabulous Briggite Winkler -- those of you in Colorado, go to her workshops Tom Stermitz just announced, you won't regret it!) Cons: too hot -- Montreal in July is sticky & muggy -- it seemed obvious that this was the wrong month to put on this event in this city, but they're doing it again this year. Too crowded: the numbers of bodies in studios sometimes made it hard to adequately see & take part (partly because teachers were unwilling to kick some students they should have down from the crowded Level II to the empty Level I). No practice space! -- This was a biggie when people are absorbing so much; enough people complained that I'm sure it's been addressed (though I don't actually know what changes have been made for this year's workshop). Hope this is useful to anyone considering a visit there or this year's workshop. I am glad Pedro is not one of the judges because he has completely misinterpreted the Bottomers' comments. Clearly, BLACK clothing is the appropritate criterion for judging. But the Bottomers' irresponsible publication of this criterion will make the situation most difficult for the judges because everyone will wear black. The most obvious solution is to evaluate the blackness of everyone's clothing under different colored lights to determine which clothing are the most black. To keep an element of surprise, the color of the lights should not be revealed to the contestants in advance. ;-) --Steve de Tejas
