Frank, I am absolutely of your opinion (unless fantasia on the dance floor

that list. Just lighten up a bit, folks...

It's is sad for me to see what is happening on the List. I've commented in
the past about all the good it has done for me; finding teachers and making
friends. One of those friends is Alberto, who, if he is proud of me, is not
so because of my silly joke about Tina's inane comment about whether men and
women walk the same. Now the disease of ad hominum attacks and accusations
of dual identities has appeared to have infected even the most trivial
dialogue.
I don't know Pepito except by his postings.
Tina went on to comment:

I hope she really is sincere. But I am not the man for that job, unless it
is to manage the data base of the real names and verifiable addresses and
phone numbers of all subscribers, added as a requirement for membership in
Tango-L, to eliminate forever the possibility of anonymous postings and the
problems that flow from them.

Subject: Carlos Saura movie "Tango" high cost
Carlos Saura's movie "Tango" was released on video
last week. But before you pull out your wallet consider this.
The VHS video tape has a price of almost $100 US.
However, I bought the movie on Digital Video Disk (DVD)
from Amazon.com and it cost me ony $17.99
Amazon books
(who have discounted the VHS version from $91 t0 $84.14)
say:
"Why is this video so expensive?
It was priced by the studio for the rental market. The
price often drops to under $30 within 6 months of its
video release date. When the studio lowers the price of
the movie, we'll adjust its price in our store. But if you
love it, and want it now, we want you to have it. Enjoy!"
It may be time to upgrade one's video equipment.
Sincerely,
Ian Winton
P. S. Late breaking news: Amazon has just upped the
price of "Tango" on DVD to $20. Aaaargh!

Very true. "Tango Lesson" was initially about $90 and fell eventually
to less than $16. The old Reynolds ball point pen market skimming
surfaces again.

Subject: Re: Toes/heels first, tango anarchy
Dear list,
I've been following recent discussions with puzzlement. We try to
dance, with more or less success, to pretty consistent "rules" we have
learned from dozens of Argentine maestros since 1986, which include leading
the step and keeping one's weight on the ball of the foot, keeping knees and
ankles together, leading with the chest, brushing through, etc etc and so
forth, including the 8-count basic beginning on count 2 to the side, as a
teaching/engineering tool. So I'm not saying that these concepts are
written in stone just because Fino, Roberto Grassi, Lampazo, Raul Bravo,
Juan Carlos Copes, Juan Bruno, Pupi, Graciela, Orlando Paiva, Nito & Elba,
El Aleman, and many many others are all in basic agreement, with some
variations. Despite basic agreement, all of the above have (or had)
distinct personal styles. And all have emphasized that, despite agreement on
basic techniques, exceptions abound . . .for special situations, personal
expression, and just because.
Are they ALL wrong? Are they all dinosaurs? If there is no consistency,
how do you know you are dancing tango and not tarantella, zambeikiko, or
bebop? Perhaps tango is in a transition period where the ideas that
prevailed from the '40s until a couple of years ago are becoming supplanted.
Some of the younger dancers are eager to put their own imprint on the dance;
this has happened many times in the past, and will again if tango is to
remain vibrant. In living memory; Petroleo and Todaro have been the major
influences on what we learned as tango, setting the standard until, maybe .
. . just about now! Those of us dancing now will determine the future.
There are two possiblities: fresh ideas can enrich tradition, or the soul of
tango will be lost in anarchy.
The only practical problem with leading with the heels, and/or putting
weight on the heels, comes when it is necessary or aesthetically desirable
to pivot or swivel. Therefore if one dances in a straight-line style,
perhaps in club or close embrace to Darienzo/Biagi a heel lead works fine.
Some salon-style dancers who lead mostly with the ball of the foot will lead
with, or even turn on, their heels occasionally for dramatic effect.
My great puzzlement about many of the posts on this list is the fervor
about tiny details of technique, and insistence on one or another form of
dancing/teaching. New ideas are usually interesting, but the 'never'
/'always' content of some of them seem a little excessive. Of course, tango
is or should be excessive :-) so there you are.
Abrazos to all, Barbara

Hi all,
I want to thank all of you who wrote me with the info about Cecilia and
Chicho in Montreal. I was able to contact the right person and take care of
a small but important detail. I really appreciate it, you are a very nice
bunch and you helped me a lot, thanks again.
Now, for those of you who will have the chance to take those workshops in
Montreal I would say do not miss your chance. Chicho and Cecilia are
excellent dancers and very good teachers. Every time I take lessons from
them I learn more.
They were just in Tampa last weekend and we had the good fortune to see them
there and to watch them perform along with Guillermo & Fernada. These
dancers are really a lot of fun to see and learn from. For those of you who
did not get a chance to go, please do not miss Victor's dance weekend again.
He does a beautiful job, the workshops were well attended and on time, the
milongas were fun and the Dinner/Show/dance on Sunday night was really fun.
The dancers, singer and live music were just great. The Centro Asturiano is
a great place with lots of character and a spacious dance floor. Good job
Victor!

Subject: About a tanguera dancing on her toes
I'm,I'm sure, like many of you who while not dancing enjoy observing the
couples on the floor. I'm a relative newcomer to tango and while I know or
believe I should be watching how the other men dance my natural tendency is
to observe the women. One night, several weeks ago, a particular woman caught
my attention. It was early at the milonga and floor was not crowded and she
exhibited unsurpassed grace and eligance. I watched her feet and it appeared
to me that at no time during several tangos did her heels touch the floor. I
made this observation to my partner and she was in agreement. When the woman
who was the object of my attention came off the floor I expressed my
appreciation and asked her about her style. She told me that she was unaware
of the phenominon and that she just gave heself to the music and the lead. I
suggested to my partner that she try to dance without her heels touching the
floor and when she did she was lighter in my arms, more balanced and more
responsive to my lead. Of course I would like to get beyong thinking about
which part of my foot I place my weight, but until then I have a strategy.

Subject: doing your own thing
This note is in response to Al and Barbara (batango @slipnet) but it is
relevent to all.
I too am amazed at how some of the people on this list can have such extended
debates about such small points about tango. Do they dance very much? Most of
my knowledge about the dance has come from the dance floor, not tango chat
rooms. I emulate what I see the best dancers do. Very simple. Keeping a note
pad in your pocket, having long drawn out debates and basically
over-analyzing is not going to make you a better dancer. And it's OK to
forget stuff, just keep moving. It will all come back.
Al and Barbara's comments are very intelligent and insightful. Rules are
important. They help establish guidelines and give form. There is no reason
to be threatened by them. I have noticed that most people that want to reject
rules and "lighten up" and do their own thing are usually not very good
dancers. And where it shows the most is in the most basic element of tango,
the walk. When something becomes difficult it is easy to dismiss it as not
important anyway because then you can have an excuse for not being able to do
it. But expression is nothing without form.
Some people need ruedas and line dances and other distractions to enjoy
dancing because it is too much work to try to perfect their tango. Follow
those rules that you believe in. Beautiful expression in your tango will come
because you have mastered them, not because you have discarded them. It is
possible and even necessary to study tango for years so the fact that someone
is ready to throw out the rules after only a few years or less probably says
a lot about the quality of their dancing.
..baila siempre con gracia y elegancia,
Charles

I invite you and your "most prominent dancer in Florida" to get on the dance floor next to me in any of the milongas of my city - Buenos Aires. "No rules! No regulations! No stipulations!", as you said. Let the locals be the judges. And the losers will buy me a bottle of champagne.
I hope that a "poor boy" from West Palm Beach, Florida, USA can afford
a trip to the Tango capital of the world, or should I start a collection among the milongueros?
