Carlos Saura's movie "Tango" is now out on video.
It was released yesterday August 3,1999.
So, you might want to check with your local video store to see if they have
it in or are planning to add it to their shelves.

If you mean Tango Magic, you didn't miss anything. The choreography the
dancers did were more akin to jazz dancing than Argentine tango.

<< !Hola listeros!
Quite often I read, on this list, of television screenings of tango on US
television. You can't believe how frustrating this is to those of us who
aren't in the US!
Would anybody know how I can get videos of these programs (maybe a
compilation tape)? Perhaps some of this footage might even be on a website
somewhere?
There is a small, but suitably tango-obsessed group of us in Australia who
avidly follow every bit of tango we can find on video.
...And I won't even begin to describe how much we'd like to attend the many
tango events you all discuss.

More about Alberto & Valorie!
Alberto was born in Argentina and he grew up on the streets of Buenos Aires.
Valorie is an American with a natural artistic sensitivity for the Argentine
Tango, the music, the dance and its culture. Her relaxed response to the
traditional role playing between a man and woman focus on the luxury of
being cared for in the embrace, of being responsible for her vocabulary of
movements and the luxury of being able to express her femininity, her
womanliness without a thought to political correctness.
They teach and practice the traditional and time-honored concept of true
improvisation. That is, to dance on the spur of the moment, to make, invent
or arrange offhand patterns and figures that result from an understanding of
the eight body positions of Tango dancing. They are known for their clear
and fair teaching techniques and their smooth, elegant and musical style of
dancing.
They have trained intensively and extensively in Buenos Aires to perfect
their craft and teaching techniques under the personal tutoring of master
Mingo Pugliese. Mingo is a disciple of Carlos Alberto Estevez, better known
as Petroleo, widely recognized as the innovator of Tango. The whole of Tango
dancing is embodied in eight body positions and the Eight-movement right and
left turns. This is a time proven concept developed from the late 30's to
the early 50's by Carlos Alberto Estevez, a.k.a. Petroleo, Salvador Sciana,
Mingo Pugliese and other innovators. It's a method based on understanding
the concept of men creating and utilizing space to mark the woman's steps
and women perfecting their technique to dance with confidence into the space
of the embrace.
Based in San Francisco, one of the great dance centers of North America,
Alberto &Valorie teach an ongoing series of classes and also host a very
popular milonga. Alberto is the originator and joint editor with Valorie of
a monthly Argentine Tango magazine called 'El Firulete'. They have hosted
many great teachers including Esther and Pablo Pugliese, Nito & Elba, Diego
& Carolina, first class masters from Argentina. Valorie felt a need to
especially help women improve their skills and recently started her Tango
barre (the successful series for women taught by Valorie Hart) This is an
ongoing class given like a ballet barre class (tango barre!), designed for
all levels of dancers. Material addressed and worked on: balance,
embellishments, stretching, giros, music identification and interpretation,
confidence enhancement, body management. We're looking forward to Valorie's
perspective from the women's side.

I went and I had a good time. I can't say the show went off without a
hitch: things started late because one of the cast members (the
singer) got caught up for some reason. But, the show itself I found
very enjoyable, particularly because I hadn't seen many of them
before. I particularly enjoyed Angel & Rosa from Mexico. I thought
there choreography was wonderfully musical and their dancing elegant
and precise. Another high point was seeing Christian & Lorena - age
16 and 13 (did I read that right?!?!) who danced very beautifully and
then continued dancing at the milonga until 1:00 when it finally shut
down.
The dancing afterwards was a bit crowded on the main floor, but, they
also let up dance up on the stage, and that provided some more space.
The venue itself was nice, I thought. It was beautifully landscaped,
had a decent stage and a nice atmosphere. As I mentioned before, the
dance floor was a little crowded afterward, but, you get that a lot of
places until people start thinning out later in the evening (and they
did).
This was the first time they'd put something like this together, and
considering that, it went great. Sure, there were a few glitches,
but, I was having too much of a good time to notice, myself (I'll
admit that was partly due to a particular lady who I was with that
evening, but, in any case, I was having fun =) ).
Anyway, that's my opinion. Other people I talked to from San Diego
gave kind of mixed reviews, but, they all seemed to like the
performances a lot, in any case.

Maritza Bodine made some kind of noise about doing it again, and it
seemed like a popular idea. You might want to contact her.

Subject: tango weekend in Cleveland
This weekend was filled with tango in Cleveland, topping off the last tango
at the Diamondback Brewery.
Friday the New York Buenos Aires Connection performed to a capacity crowd at
the Cleveland Museum of Art. Breaking all records in the time they were sold
out. Along with them Roxana and Fabian from Canada did stage tango to their
music, thrilling everyone present with their swift, sexy and raw dancing
style.
Saturday was even more exciting, Pablo Aslan, bassist for the NYBAC taught a
Musicality class at the Diamondback Brewery. Everything you would want to
know about the tango the music.
Roxana and Fabian taught private dance lessons all afternoon, hosting a
milonga at night. The biggest treat for me was Fabian playing my bandoneon
for the crowd. It's the first time I ever heard a song out of it. Usually all
I hear is scales.
What mente a lot to all present Roxana and Fabian dance with absolutely
everyone there. This couple really worked hard and showed everyone a good
time. I plan on bringing this couple back to Cleveland for more workshops and
recommend them to anyone looking for instructor for workshops.
By the way, what was the last tango played at the DB?
"UNA EMOCION" by Ricardo Tanturi con Enrique Campos

Subject: La Academia de Susana Miller en Buenos Aires
The milonga Regin closed last November. The space on the first floor at
Riobamba and Corrientes has been completely renovated. It is now the
location for classes of Susana Miller and Ana Maria Schapira.
What was once a small, dark place has been transformed into a bright, large
dance studio with one mirrored wall. The floor, which used to be stone, is
wood. There is a new bar area. It is equipped with new tables and chairs.
The renovation work is not complete, but classes are being held on Monday,
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at 8:30 pm; Sunday at 7pm. There was a
large class in session on Wednesday night when I dropped by at 10:30pm.
