Even more intuition will be found when the follow sometime = tryes to lead. This opens one's eyes to accept and respect partner. It = helped me a lot to discover some bad manners I used to have.=20 [Heini-Elina Soutamo] .... the leads to try to embody and to = incorporate some of those qualities of the follow in his own dance movement. In effect, the lead = reflects back to the follow a piece of her dancing. In this way, the lead behaves in ways similar to the follow. His = awareness is drawn out of thinking about moves, steps, and his lead. He is = encouraged to be more aware of his partner. By incorporating a piece of his partner within = himself, he becomes closer and more atuned to his follow. In order to lead better, = the leader attunes himself _as a follower_ to his partner. The skills required to respond to the follow in this way seem similar = to the skills of a good follow. [Heini-Elina Soutamo] ... She uses broad, intuitive = awareness to respond to the motions of her lead and to add her own interpretations. [Heini-Elina Soutamo] This also helps the lead to understand how much = time some embellishments need to be executed properly, etc.=20 =20 It is as though my lead is an offering to listen to what her body = has to say. In response, my leads can offer empathy, understanding, and compassion to = what her body tells me. [Heini-Elina Soutamo] having sometimes this kind of lead, it just makes = you feel you are in heaven. There is no grouded floor just you and your = partner as one soul letting the music flow through you. heini

At a swing dance last night, a relatively clueful fellow dancer told me that there was recently a "big tango convention/event in BsAs and a bunch of Americans all went down and participated". He implied that this wasn't just the normal state of events in BsAs (lots of milongas and classes) but something more on the order of Stanford Tango Week. According to him, it was much more than a standard Amercian Tango Tour where an American instructor arranges a group visit to BsAs. I was surprised, since I never saw any announcements or any indication that anyone on this list had attended or asked about going, nada, nothing, zilch. Does anyone know anything about this alleged event? jc

This sounds very much like Congreso Internacional de Tango Argentino (CITA), the week long tango congress organized by Gustavo Naveira and Fabian Salas. It was March 22-28, had more than 20 well-known instructors and about 150 attendees. CITA was announced on Tango-L several times and there were several very favorable postings to Tango-L about CITA shortly after it ended. Williams" <frank @INDY.BSBE.UMN.EDU> Subject: Re: The Intuitive Lead Hi friends, One of the great things about tango is the many, many levels on which we can communicate with our partner. Eric wrote eloquently about being a sensitive leader and I also try to be as accomodating as possible. And all I wanted to add was this: often times, being sensitive means accepting the expectation that you'll lead boldly even if you dance at the "fringe" of the follower's experience. In tango as in other relationships, our preferences, expectations, and desires are always evolving. Except for the fundamental of good basic technique, I can think of no other single definition of "good" that applies to every dance with every partner. Can you? ...appreciate hearing your thoughts... Hi JC, I'm a little surprised that you have not heard about the C.I.T.A. in Buenos Aires held in March. I posted notices about the upcoming event several times and with plenty of advanced notice. Too bad you missed them. It was indeed a "big tango convention/event in BsAs and a bunch of Americans all went down and participated". I was there as well as many other tangueros from the US as well as the world. I actually wrote a review of the event that you can probably find in the archives. In a nutshell, Gustavo Naveira and Fabian Salas staged the first International Congress of Argentine Tango in Bs As. It was the biggest tango event of that nature. It featured about 20 of the most accomplished and famous dancers / teachers in the world and included big nightly milongas and shows as well as daily classes in six separate venues. The music was live by fabulous orchestras including "Sexteto Major", "Los Reyes del Tango", "Cuarteto Almagro" and more that I cannot recall just now. The event was a resounding success and came off extremely well particularly since it was the first effort (and a huge effort at that) of this type by Fabian And Gustavo. They plan to continue with these in a yearly schedule so save your money for next year :-) If you need any more details please email me and I'll be glad to answer any specific questions. regards, Manuel

It was as you said except that I would judge the attendees to exceed 300. I spoke with Fabian just last night about his plans for C.I.T.A. next year and it sounds very exciting. I will post more info as soon as I get the details. If it will be better than the last one it will be memorable indeed. With all due respect to the Stanford Tango weeks and all the other Tango weeks I attended (I loved them all and wish that Stanford was still happening), C.I.T.A. was orders of magnitude better in all respects except perhaps the higher cost of travel to Bs As. Regards, Manuel

Date: Fri, 30 Apr 1999 23:09:04 EDT From: Arthur Greenberg <AHGberg @AOL.COM> Subject: Jorge Nel's Tango Congress in Miami Beach...afterthoughts Hi Tangueros & Tangueras: At one time in my life, I thought I couldn't get enough ice cream until I took a job with an Ice Cream Company that allowed me to eat as much ice cream as I could possibly "pig out on"! Since that time I have reduced my intake of ice cream significantly. I am much more discriminating in my tastes and I also discovered that there are certainly some ice creams that taste better than others! It is of course quite dependent on one's taste. It is analogous to Argentine Tango! Take this fascinating commodity, the artform called Argentine Tango! When one is offered the choice of 12 different "classes" per day plus a one hour "sitting discussion/lecture" at the end of each day (before dinner)......followed by a Milonga with live music on a great wooden dance floor that held 50 to 80 couples and left much room for everyone to maneuver.......I took my mission seriously....that was to meet and dance with as many newly acquainted ladies that were in attendance. Although I could only remember the names of only 20 or 25 out of the 30 new ladies I met by the end of the congress, I considered my mission accomplished. Try as I would, however, I could not remember all the new variations that were presented in all of the classes that I attended either. I understand that there is a Taped Video Cassette of each item presented to refresh one's memory!. Since I cannot obtain the names and addresses of all the people I met that I would love to drop a line to and offer thanks for all the good tangos I will offer that ,"Thank you!",now! By the end of the week I must confess that I was experiencing the same syndrome that had affected me when I got an overdose of ice cream at Howard Johnson's. "Burnt out " is not an expression that I admit to. My thirst for Tango, I must admit, was overwhelmingly quenched. Nevertheless, I will be one of the first on line to enroll for Jorge's next year's Tango Congress in Miami Beach, Florida. The newly decorated Radisson Hotel on the beach was a superb location. The air conditioning worked to keep everyone comfortable. The hotel's pool was simply great and the beach as well as the pool was amply supplied with bikini clad bodies that kept one from seriously dozing off. Jorge & Marta were personally involved in every step of the organization and it showed. From my vantage point almost everything went smoothly and according to their careful planning. The staff of marvelous Tango Masters engaged to teach, enthusiastically gave their all to assure that the students in attendance got their money's worth. When there was a problem and there were few, the problem was handled with coolness and finesse. The hotel rooms came at a bargain rate. The Miami Beach, Florida weather was superb. I dined in some great local restaurants. I met some beautiful new people who had the same passion for Tango that I had. Now if I could only dance like Armando Orzuza or Osvaldo Zotto. My return again to next year's congress is motivated on that hope and dream that I can reasonably capture that "Felino" movement of Zotto's or evidence that tender yet powerful movement displayed by Armando in his heavenly dancing with Daniela. Wow! .....in my dreams!!! :-) I can't wait for next year's Miami Beach Tango congress to arrive. I will try to be ready for all that great "immersion in Argentine Tango". I promise that I will be better next year and the next year. So please keep me informed, Jorge of the details of your next Congress in Miami Beach, Florida! I hope to see all you marvelous tango dancers who attended this year at next year's Congress. What flavor would you like? I'll take a double dip of that scrumptious walnut mocha ice cream ! Don't let it melt....I'll be right back! After this Tango! Sincerely, Arturo AHGberg @aol.com West Palm Beach, Florida, USA

I would have joined, but for my limited budget (one night at the Alvear Palace Hotel cleaned me out of $US 650, approx. the same cost as the whole week at CITA, but I figured that the night of my engagement will only happen once in a lifetime, whereas I believe CITA will turn into an annual event!). As it turned out, I was proposing to Clair in front of the Obelisk just as the last CITA milonga was winding up at Club Espan~ol (which was around 6am on the morning of March 29th), and bumped into a couple of SF tangueras walking back up Corrientes. We kept a website going while we were over there - if anyone on the list is heading to BsAs in the near future, check www.glebe.net.au/batrip for a feel of the city from the point of view of a mad Australian dancer.
