Dear list,
I have a friend visiting from US and have this question for you.
Could someone please inform me about if there are any Argentine Tango
festivals or workshops to visit in Europe - the closer to Sweden the
better - in the period 25 May to 9 June 1999?
Also larger milongas or similar arrangements would be interesting.
Sincerely yours,

LS,
I have just been informed that the III Paris Festival June 9 - 13 in the
Casino de Paris is cancelled due to reasons of security in the theater
(among others).
The organization is determined to host a bigger and better festival same
period next year, possibly in the Cirque d'Hiver.
You may contact the organizers through cmouradian @europost.org

Dear Tangueros/Tangueras,
For those of you travelling to Buenos Aires soon and interested in learning
Argentine Folklore dances (chacarera, gato, chamame, and zamba), Cynthia
Fattore (541/362-9791) will begin a six week course beginning April 25th,
1999 at La Galeria, Boedo 722, 7:30-9:30pm (Tuesdays and Thursdays).
Cynthia will teach a separate class dedicated to zamba after this six week
course. Zamba is a much more difficult dance to learn and the learning
goes quicker if the students are able to dance chacarera and gato.
Cynthia is a professional dancer with a long list of professional
credentials as a folklore dancer. She is a GREAT teacher and a beautiful
dancer who LOVES this music and the dance.

Most stores that carry this CD keep it in the classical section.
I find that the music on the CD has a beautiful lyrical quality. I would
enjoy dancing to several of the selections on occasion, but the recording
does not have the strong dance beat that characterizes the music most
frequently used for dancing.

I agree that the two CD set of music from Forever Tango is well
recorded and well played, and nearly all the pieces have a strong
dance beat. Seems ideal for playing at a milonga, but most of the
songs are taken at a faster tempo than similar recordings by
orchestras from the golden age--which in my opinion makes them
poorly suited for social dance.
Until I saw the video, I thought the music on the CDs was played
at a fast tempo to make it more suitable for show dancing. The
music on the video is played at a noticably slower tempo, however.

Dear Tangueras,
Does anyone have advice and/or suggestions for
sore feet from dancing. I just started tango 6 months ago, do it a
couple of times a week and now my feet hurt constantly especially on
the balls of my feet. I have never had feet problems before. Also
there have been several comments lately about shoes and a few women
have remarked that" Flabella really knows where to put the heel" on a
woman's shoe. Could someone enlighten me as to what this means?

The April 26 & May 3, 1999 issue of The New Yorker magazine has an ad
between pages 16 and 17 for some Argentine Wines. At the bottom of the ad is
a note saying if you want more information about Trapiche and to learn the
tango, visit us at <www.trapichewines.com>
While the wines claim to be Argentine the source for the instructions
regarding the Tango seems to be ballroom dancing. Maybe others on the list
could check it out and make a more informed comment or two on the Tango
information that is found on the site.

Amazing...It seams that all about tango coming "officially" from Argentina
is pathetic.
Same happens with the "efforts" of the Argentinean Embassy in Washington in
trying to promote the tango...
Hope tango lovers will not take this kind of things like the authentic tango
danced by the people of Buenos Aires.

Subject: sore tango feet -Reply
Colette,
I suspect the "balls" of your feet are hurting because you are putting all
your weight in the metatarsal of your foot. You are probably shifting all
of your weight to the front of your shoe. This can build up pressure,
especially if you are wearing heals.
When my metatarsal of my foot feels sore, I begin to concentrate in
placing my weight more evenly in my shoe. In other words, think of
walking naturally. You wouldn't place all your weight forward in your
shoe, so this is the crucial point: You need to be able to place weight
evenly through the whole foot, including the heel.
For me, a good tango heel is absolutely straight, with no cut or angling
inward or on a slant. This might give a graceful line, but standing on
such a heel I feel like I am going to tip over, or lose my balance. The
weight in such a slanted or cut heel is driven forward, so it's as if the
heel is useless. I cannot put my weight on it. Also, I find a good tango
heel is thicker or broader to give me the structure and base of support I
need.
This is what works for me. Feet are so individual. I have salsa shoes
and tango shoes. The tango shoes are patent leather and have
stretched with no support. Patent leather and suede stretch, so I would
suggest soft leather. Lately, I am wearing a pair of T-strap salsa shoes.
The heels are a little thin, but the heeel is "placed right".
I suggest you find a local shoemaker with shoes in hand
that you find comfortable. Sometimes it could be the heel of one shoe
and the body of another. Just think of elements that work in your normal
heel-wearing and make the adjustments in a thicker, straight heel.
Anyway, this is what works for me. I hope it's of help.
Diane
I hope this helps.

tango.
Nice background wall paper on the site though.
Happy trails,

The tango material may be pathetic, but Trapiche wines are generally quite
good in the mid-price range. If the meal is beef, Argentine or otherwise,
I especially enjoy the Malbec, a hearty full-bodied tinto. Along that
line, you might wish to check out the May/June 1999 issue of 'Saveur', a
slick cuisine mag. There is a lengthy article on Argentine food and drink,
with recipes and photos, and some enjoyable local color.

Sorry to disagree with you. I my taste Trapiche is a wine "for export". No
local flavor.
You should try Rincon Famoso, from Bodegas Lopez.
