Subject: Re: "Forever Tango" video AND CD
By the time I got the "Forever Tango" video I'd heard that it was
one hour long, so that didn't disappoint me. There were some other
things that I didn't like. The reproduction wasn't perfect: there
was a bit of graininess. The background behind the dancers was
mostly black (a choice of the director that goes against my
personal taste). Also there are three songs; I would have
preferred it to be ALL dancing.
Still, I was very happy with the dancing. In addition to the usual
dance pyrotechnics & precision, the choreography fit the music very
well & portrayed emotion as well as technique. And the music isn't
all frantically fast; some of it is slower & more sensual, letting
the dancers show more complex emotions.
I also liked the fact that the director was able to use several
cameras & was able to get different angles on the action, including
closeups, something you can't get from a stage show.
The video was worth what I paid for it; I look forward to another.

Speaking of music, no one has yet commented about the two "Forever
Tango" CDs. I have them & they are absolutely terrific. About them
I have no reservations whatsoever.

I dashed off my description of Jorge's Miami Tango Congress without
mentioning two of the instructors -- Daniela Arcuri and Armando Orzuza.
Their personalities are evident in their playful and expressive style of
dance. Beside being very caring people, they're top-flight teachers and
they make tango fun.
I highly recommend their classes to anyone.
(On a side note: This September 3-6, Alberto Paz and Valorie Hart are
hosting a 3rd Annual Tango Weekend Getaway in Reno, Nevada. Daniela and
Armando will be joining them along with Guillermo Merlo and Fernanda Ghia!)

Subject: Jorge Nel's Miami Tango Congress was great!
I returned from the 1999 Miami Tango Congress, where I spent a week with
several of my friends from Detroit dancing Tango and meeting new friends.
Jorge Nel and Marta organized and hosted one terrific event. The
instructors were among the world's finest exponents of Argentine tango,
namely:
* Carlos & Alicia
* Osvaldo & Lorena
* The Dinzels
* and Eduardo & Veronica
All instructors taught several levels -- covering beginner, intermediate
and advanced concepts in tango, milonga and vals. And an interesting
development this year was the addition of several classes in tango fantasia.
The accomodations were extremely comfortable. The hotel was right on the
beach and the staff was helpful and courteous.
A variety of restaurants in the immediate area satisfied everyone's taste
and pocketbook. I especially liked a couple of the Italian restaurants
located just across the street. And one spot called within walking distance
(called "Las Vegas") served a nice sampling of Cuban cuisine.
The nightly Milongas featured a live orchestra and DJ while dancers mingled
and practiced. The attendees were friendly and graciously helped one
another in classes and on the social dance floor.
I highly recommend Jorge's event; he can count on a return visit from all
of us next year!
(I have nothing to gain financially or otherwise from this information. I
am presenting it here to let others know what a great time we had!)

for me the question is one of balance. tango feeds needs within that
go deep. but it is not complete, and i find myself feeling out of
balance if i try to feed myself completely with the tango. so i am
deliberate about pursuing other interests. when i find the right
balance, an elusive art, i find that different pursuits enrich each
other. for example, recently i spent five days on a solo trip in the
desert canyon lands of utah. strong connection to nature and self -
when i came back to the tango it was with renewed excitement.
your own internal emotional compass will tell you when you are out of
balance.
also, this relates to the fine line between obsession, the activity
controls you, and passion - the activity enriches and energizes you.

The one I have and enjoy for listening is Barenboim with Mederos and Console -
Mi Buenos Aires Querido is the title tune. It's on Teldec, 0630-13474-2
One wouldn't generally expect happenin' dance music from a classical performer,
and that's the case with this disk. All of the renditions are thoughtful,
flawlessly executed, and lovely for listening. I've heard this disc criticized
because it's not great dance music, but then everybody has different tastes in
dance music. The complex formula of musical elements that "move the feet" is
different for everybody. Let's just say that if this music works for you, it
will bring out the "classical" side of your tango dancing!
Best regards,

I doubt that I'm the only one who pays attention to a lady's feet and how she
expresses herself at floor level - in so many little ways. You put a killer
pair of shoes on a stunning lady like Cherie and, well, what's not to like?
IMHO, whether they're pretty or not, your shoes are always "talking" - and
when the audience is large, it's often best to "speak slowly"!

I have such a CD purchased in a local Wellngton book store!
Mi Buenos Aires Querido: Tangos Among Friends
featuring
D. Barenboim - piano
Rodolfo Mederos - bandoneon
Hector Console - Bass
It is a 1996 Teldec recording # 0630-13474-2
total time 51'46"
Barenboim is quoted:
In this sentimenatl record, I invite you to share in the delightful rhythms,
the sensuous
melodies, and the timeless magic of `My Beloved Buenos Aires'
And I would echo - the pieces are interpretations/stylisations of very
familiar Tangos
- sentimental as Barenboim states and therefore not punchy - subsequently a
bit harder
to dance to with a smooth/clearly-featured through-line -- however they are
absolutely
lovely to listen to overall (some more danceable than others)
I include this only for general comment -- if you are looking for Barenboim
it may be
for you without question - if others are looking for dance CD's they might
want to have
a listen to see if it suits.
all the best
abrazos

I've read a lot of mail lately about shoes: where to buy them
and what to put on them. I started to feel my dance shoes
weren't so good until I read Chris Humphrey's response about
Gomina.
She (I'm guessing Chris is a woman since she dances in heels)
is correct. "Technique is totally independent of what's on my
feet." Shoes can't improve your lead if you lead with your
arms and not your shoulders. Shoes with felt or other soft
substance will aid in pivots. (It's difficult to pivot in
shoes with rubber soles and heels, but not impossible.)
I love my dance shoes. They cost about $100 and they're not a
fancy brand. I don't even remember the brand. They feel fine
after I broke them in and my dancing has improved. Lessons and
practice have also helped.
I'm reminded of an old Gomer Pyle episode. (I'm really showing
my age.) Each marine in the Sgt. Carter's platoon had to take
a turn at leading the men. (Another sign of my age.) Gomer had
no confidence in his ability to give drill instructions.
Gomer's uncle told him about Excelsior. He gave him a badge
with the word on it and Gomer was able to lead the platoon.
When Gomer returned it to his uncle, the uncle put it back on
refrigerator door as it was the manufacturer's name.
It's fine for dancers to think that their shoes make the
difference. But remember, the shoes don't know how to dance,
The person inside them knows (or doesn't know) how to dance.
I can imagine two women commenting on a poor leader. One says
"He's so rough with me. I feel like my right arm is going to
be pulled out of the socket." The other says "So what. Look at
those shoes!"
I'm putting on my asbestos jacket in preparation for the
incoming flames.
At Milongas, everybody is at see level. With so many people
dancing, I don't understand how it's possible to track shoes
across a dance floor.

Subject: Pampa & Christy in Santa Barbara, CA
If you're looking for Tango this weekend, consider coming to Santa Barbara!
Santa Barbara is a beautiful seaside resort, just a short drive north of
Los Angeles on US101. On Saturday, April 24 Pampa Cortes and Christy Cote
will teach two workshops:
The beginning workshop is 1-3 pm & will cover basic technique &
floorcraft.
The intermediate/advanced workshop is 4-7 pm & will cover advanced
technique & figures suitable for tango and milonga.
Pampa & Christy will also be teaching private classes on Sunday April 25.
Space is going fast, so please call to reserve a time-slot.
Pampa is a veteran performer and teacher with nearly four decades of dance
experience, including two years as a principal dancer with "Forever Tango."
He's been a featured instructor at Stanford Tango Week, last year's
Tango-at-Sea dance cruise, and many other venues. Pampa & Christy are noted
for their warmth & humor, and for being thorough, caring teachers.
