I hope the topic is of interest to listeros. Melinda ----- Original Message ----- From: <andy_cahn @sonymusic.com> To: <argentine-tango @egroups.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 02, 2000 10:58 AM Subject: [ATOF] Marcelo Alvarez Sings Carlos Gardel> Hello all. I'm new to the list, so I'll introduce myself. My name is Andy Cahn, Promotion Manager at Sony Classical. I wanted to let you know about a CD we are releasing in the US later this month called "Marcelo Alvarez Sings Gardel." I'm sure you all know all about Gardel, but maybe you don't know Alvarez, an operatic tenor from Argentina who records for Sony Classical. His first disc for us was a collection of Italian Arias, but for his new disc, he went back to Argentina to record his favorite Carlos Gardel songs with a great band of tango musicians, including pianist Pablo Ziegler. There is even a "duet" between Alvarez and Gardel on "Mi Buenos Aires Querido." You can check it out on the web at http://sonyclassical.com/music/61840. I would like to send this out to all the major tango organizations throughout the US. Could someone please help me out with any kind of mailing list? I would also appreciate any information on radio shows that play a lot of tango classics. If you can help me out, I'll hook you up with an advance disc! You can email me at andy_cahn @sonymusic.com. Also, there is a TV special called "Marcelo Alvarez: In Search of Gardel" that is scheduled to run on PBS stations this fall. It's mostly a documentary on Gardel's life and music, and how he is remembered in Buenos Aires. There are also behind the scenes footage on the making of the Alvarez CD and music videos of a few of the tracks. WNET in New York, WNED in Buffalo, WPBT in Miami and KUAT in Tucson have agreed to air the show this September and October, but I could use some help convincing stations in other cities to air this great tango music program. If you go to the "PBS STATION LOCATOR" page at http://www.pbs.org/stationfinder, you can enter your zipcode to find the station near you. You can then click on a station to find the phone number and email address. PBS programmers definitely pay attention to audience response. If you let your station know that you want to see "In Search of Gardel" and other tango programs on TV, it will make a difference. If someone out there operates a tango website, and wants to list the stations with their phone numbers and email addresses, I can help set that up for you. If you have a place where we can put up any posters about the CD and TV special, I can send you materials. Thanks, and please contact me at andy_cahn @sonymusic.com if you can help out in any way. Date: Wed, 9 Aug 2000 10:08:01 -0400 From: Luda & Gabriel <magaldi @SYMPATICO.CA> Subject: MISC: source of Argentinian CD's Dear Tango List: I'm trying to find a source in the US for buying tango CD's made in Argentina. I remember seeing the name of a supplier on this list at one time who operated out of the San Francisco area, but I've misplaced both the name and address. If someone could send me his name and address, and/or any others I might contact, I would greatly appreciate it. I have tried ordering CD's directly from Argentina via catalogues sent to me, but I found the process cumbersome, unreliable, and frustrating. If anyone has any suggestions about this process, they, too, would be greatly appreciated. Luda
