Date: Fri, 4 Aug 2000 07:56:33 GMT From: Alexis White <alexisltc @HOTMAIL.COM> Subject: NA-W: CHICHO Invades L.A. Sep.-Oct. RUN FOR YOUR LIVES! NEWS BREAK CHICHO Invades L.A! Sep.16-Oct.15. RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!! Arrival of flashy, flame-haired, sneaker-wearing, ear-ringed tango subversive sends pontificators, tradition-bound preservers of the almighty purity and sanctity of our Tango fleeing from entrenched positions. This tango revolutionary is known to espouse provocative and extremely dangerous ideas (improvised sacadas for women, highly unorthodox ganchos, mixing fun with tango, and worse). These preposterous and scandalous views should be banned before our cherished tango traditions are undermined, and these notions are spread further. He Must Be Stopped At All Costs! Check out our website for more info: www.losangelestango.com Chicho & Lucia will be in L.A., Orange County, San Diego and Santa Barbara from Sept. 16 through Oct. 14. They will give two 2hr. classes on Saturdays and Sundays ($28 ea . class) and two 11/2hr. classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays ($20 ea. class)for the duration of their stay (levels are geared towards the more advanced/experienced dancers). There will be a big welcoming bash (party!)at 'El Encuentro' on Sat. Sept. 16 and a HUGE gala event for their farewell (party! again)on Oct. 14. So come on over to So. California all you hip and cool tangophiles on the West Coast. Remember the Faith Principle of Tango Special Events: The amount of fun you have is inversely proportional to the amount of money you pay. (translation: save your money, and come and get the best, affordable, quality instruction and dance at some of the greatest (and inexpensive) milongas on the West Coast, right here in L.A.) ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

In=20 speaking with those who have already committed, their experience and=20 skill level are in the Intermediate to Advanced range. They all love=20 social tango with have a strong interest in the close-embrace tango.=20 A high percentage of them have dance experience in Buenos Aires. The=20 Mercury Caf=E9 milongas will have 150-180 on Friday and 100 or more on=20 Saturday, meaning that the dance floors will probably be as crowded=20 as they are in Buenos Aires. (See below for some comments on=20 Navigation and Vocabulary for Crowded Dances.) One of the cool things is that certain cities (Atlanta, Salt Lake,=20 Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles and San Francisco) are sending groups=20 of 8 - 15 dancers. If each city can be though of as a different=20 neighborhood like in 1940s Buenos Aires, then this weekend will give=20 us all an unprecedented opportunity to compare and exchange local=20 styles and habits, not to mention the chance to "dance outside of our=20 own harem." Many guests will be hosted with local dancers, meaning they'll get a=20 spare bed or couch and transportation to the milongas/classes.=20 Hosting is becoming limited; please email me if you would still like=20 to host or be hosted. The Hyatt Regency downtown is very convenient (about 6 blocks) to the=20 Mercury Caf=E9, and visitors have been able to negotiate a $65 nightly=20 fee, even for double occupancy (there is also a tax). This hotel has=20 prime access to the many restaurants and activities of Downtown=20 Denver, which has undergone a revival over the past 15 years to=20 become a very livable city. Labor Day Milonguero Style Classes. While the emphasis is on the milongas and parties, a number of=20 classes will be offered in conjunction with the Labor Day weekend,=20 presented by teachers, Chris Nassoupoulos & Caroline Peattie from San=20 =46rancisco, Robert Hauk from Portland, and Tom Stermitz and Lisa=20 Battan from Denver. One particular benefit of the classes will be the opportunity to mix=20 with and meet the many visitors. The classes will not work much with=20 figures focusing instead on musicality, rhythm and authenticity. The=20 level of dancers will be Intermediate to Advanced. Therefore, in=20 contrast to some tango weeks, we won't have a problem with levels and=20 the teachers will ask everyone to change partners frequently. We have added early arrival classes which will pay more attention to=20 vocabulary, navigation and style for those new to the close-embrace: - Wednesday (Mercury, Denver) Rob Hauk & Tom Stermitz - Thursday (Pearl St, Boulder) Rob Hauk & Lisa Battan The weekend classes will emphasize musicality, rhythm and authenticity: - Saturday (Mercury, Denver) - Sunday (Mercury, Denver) Prices and Expenses We have gone out of our way to make this an inexpensive weekend. You=20 could do all the classes and the milongas for under $60. =8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A= =8A=8A=8A Labor Day Milonguero Weekend Pre-Registration Form: Stermitz @ragtime.org Tom Stermitz, 303-388-2560 2612 Clermont St, Denver, CO 80207 Name: Address: State/Zip: Phone: Email: I need/have hosting space: # Years of Tango: # of Experience with close embrace: # Visits to Buenos Aires: I would like to attend the following classes: Wed Mercury 7:15 & 8:45: Thur Pearl St 7:15 & 8:45 Sat Mercury 12:00, 1:30 & 3:00 Sun Mercury12:00, 1:30 & 3:00 (Classes $9 each, $30/4) =8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A=8A= =8A=8A=8A Tom Stermitz stermitz @ragtime.org http://www.ragtime.org/ragtime http://www.tango.org/dance

Date: Fri, 4 Aug 2000 12:49:05 -0700 From: Linda Valentino <LindaValentino @PRODIGY.NET> Subject: NA-W: Nestor and Patricia Ray in Los Angeles! ONE LAST REMINDER: Nestor Ray, the "milonguero's milonguero" and his wife and partner Patricia Ray will teach a series of classes in Los Angeles August 4-6. They will be teaching "club style" (or "milonguero style," "confiteria style," "apilado style," "close-embrace"--pick your preferred term!) tango, milonga and tango waltz. Nestor and Patricia were our special guests last night at our Thursday night milonga, "Salon Recuerdo," and gave a SPECTACULAR demonstration of milonga with traspie and "milonguero-style" tango. This man has so much rhythm it drips from his fingertips! And is he clean! Patricia keeps up with him beautifully and elegantly, every step of the way. They were absolutely amazing! Don't miss this opportunity to study with a real master of this very rhythmic, very fun, and very popular style of tango. For more information, see our website at www.apurotango.com.
