If you want more information about the event, please contanct Pat Patton, on whose behalf I am posting this. Her contact information is at the end of the message. - Madhav Apte ps: If a friend mails you a message, asking you to post it, use "View -> Page Source" to see all the junk characters that might actually be in the message, but that your browser/mailer smartly hid from you. Apparently it doesn't work that way for everyone - sigh! So then you might have to re-type the message, which is what I am resorting to now. Ok. Enough of that, and on with the messge.

Tomas Howlin, one of Denver's most favorite Argentines, returns here for the month of August 2000, with Chantal Dauphinais from Montreal. Their style is classic and elegant, totally improvised and full of musicality and fluidity. It is deeply inspired by the traditional movements that have characterized this dance for the past 50 years. They are devoted teachers with a unique approach. Their personality, humor and method of teaching has lasting impact and brings their students to a new level of understanding the original nature of this dance. Tomas is well known in Denver for his influence on the close embrace. As one excellent Denver woman dancer said, "You can tell which men have studied with Tomas: they learn to take delicious care of the woman." For the women, Chantal and Tomas stress that following is not about "responding to the man's needs", rather, it is learning to connect and work on becoming "one". Tomas has recently taken over for Pablo Veron at Tango Montreal. He and Chantal also teach at the famous Cirque du Soleil and will be featured in a film produced by Canada called "Macadam Tango". Tomas grew up in Buenos Aires, where he studied with some of the most renowned teachers such as Graciela Gonzalez, Gustavo Naveira, Osvaldo Zotto, and Vanina Bilous. Chantal, a dance professional for 20 years, graduated from the ballet program at "Les Grands Ballets Canadiens". She has performed for numerous dance companies, touring internationally, and participated in musicals, television and film productions. She choreographed for the "Opera de Montreal". With a grant from Le Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Quebec, Chantal perfected her tango studies in Buenos Aires (where she met Tomas) with Fabian Salas, Mariano "Chicho" Frumboli, Claudia Jakobsen, Omar Vega, and Graciela Gonzalez. Tomas and Chantal Workshops: Fourteen workshops will be offered as well as private lessons and, for the first time in Denver, private groups. The following classes are strictly divided between beginners to the tango and intermediate and advanced danceers: Schedule of classes for Beginners: Thursday, August 3 in Boulder, Pearl St. Studio: 7:00 - 8:30, 8:45 - 10:15 (yes, PM) Fundamental Techniques, including walking and improvisation. Second workshop will be a continuation of the first and in response to group depth. Saturday, August 5, in Denver, Mercury Cafe: 1:00 - 2:15, 2:30 - 3:45 (PM) More on fundamental techniques in walking and improvisation, plus an introduction to basic turns. Second class will be a continuation of the first and in response to group depth. Sunday, August 6, in Denver, Mercury Cafe: 1:00 - 2:15, 2:30 - 3:45 (PM) More fundamentals, plus a focus on the close embrace and musicality for beginners. Second class will be a continuation of the first and in response to group depth. Schedule of Classes for Intermediate/Advanced Dancers: Thursday, August 10 in Boulder, Pearl St. Studio: 7:00 - 8:30, 8:45 - 10:15 (PM) Advanced techniques in balance (exercises taught to practice at home!) and musicality. Close embrace and motion in turns. Second class will be a continuation of the first and in response to group depth. Saturday, August 12 in Denver, Mercury Cafe: 1:00 - 2:15, 2:30 - 3:45 (PM) Close embrace techniques and focus on turns, different ways of turning in different styles and shapes of the turn. Embellishments for women and how to create space from the leaders to "play". Second class will be a continuation of the first and in response to group depth. Sunday, August 13, in Denver, Mercury Cafe: 1:00 - 2:15, 2:30 - 3:45. (PM) Based on the level of progress in the four previous classes, Tomas and Chantal will determine class material to maximize depth of instruction. Second class will be a continuation of the first and in response to group depth. Thursday, August 17, in Boulder, Pearl St. Studio: 7:00 - 8:30, 8:45 - 10:15 (PM). Advanced Tango Waltz. Both classes will strive to go deeper than ever with the Tango Waltz. Prices: Individual classes, $20. Four classes, $70. Additional classes, $15. Opportunities to form private groups will be offered at the workshops and throughout the month of August. Private groups allow beginners to move at a faster pace and greater depth for advanced students. Private groups of no more than 10 and no less than 6 will cost $35/person. Private lessons: $60+$5(house fee)=$65. For more information, please contact Pat Patton at 303-466-3820 or email PatP1013 @aol.com
