Dear All:
I am really getting tired of hearing people selling
"close embrace all the time" as sex. The truth is
that these people who are doing this stuff cannot
dance tango with people outside their own little
group, nor can they dance tango at all with most
people in the world. Followers trained by these
people cannot seem to follow a leader unless they are
physically leaning on them and that is a totally
ridiculous situation.
Why would one want to learn this supposed sex stuff?
Below are my reasons and opinions. I wrote this Email
to a person originally as a private E-mail, but now I
am saying what I think publicly, because I hope people
on this list will think twice about what they are
doing when they learn how to dance Argentine Tango.
My view is that tango is primarily a social dance and
one should be able to dance immediately with "anyone"
who walks in the room. If one cannot do all the
possibilities of tango, then one has not really
learned enough about how to dance tango to function in
the real world.
I really hate to see people being sold a "bill of
goods" by people who are constantly exhibiting
anti-social, cliquish behavior, in order to promote
their own little tango businesses. It may be a good
business plan, but it is boorish and bad behavior. I
would hope that these people would learn how to really
dance tango, before they start spreading this
non-sense all over the place as tango. It is at best a
small part of tango, but only a small part. Mostly is
it BS which is easy to teach just to get business.
The "real stuff" is hard to learn and it takes time.
Anyway, this is my opinion.

In response to why "close embrace all the time" does
not really work..
Dear (name left out since E-mail was private):
First....
If the woman who went to New York had to take more
tango classes from someone else to be able to dance,
then my point would be that she was not really taught
how to dance Argentine tango. She learned something
else.
Second...
Women dancing Argentine tango should not require any
body contact at all to follow a man and stay in front
of him. If she is taught properly, she should be able
to follow him no matter what.
Note:
It is almost impossible to achieve the full dynamic
range of movements in Argentine tango if both dancers
are constantly trying to shift their weight from
leaning each other's bodies for a lead and to going
back on their own weight. It just does not work well.
It can be oone, but it is inheriently messy and very
unstable.
Both dancers in Argentine tango should always be
balanced totally on their own weight, even in close
embrace, for maximum flexibility, so that they can
expand and contract the embrace easily from close to
open. They also should always be directly in front of
each other all th time. The woman should never ever be
off to one side of the man and leaning on the man's
body... looking over his shoulder. That way she looses
the lead and makes things unbalanced. The woman should
always face the man dead on and have her eyes open so
that she can be his equal partner. She should have
her eyes open most of the time, and be looking at the
man's chest and shoulders for her lead. When in close
embrace her face should touch his face, forehead to
forehead, so she can still see what is going on. Even
in close embrace, she should open her eyes from time
to time to be totally aware of her surroundings, so
that she can help the man avoid collisions from
behind. She should not close her eyes and completely
zone out...lol. That practice is why close embrace
people have floor craft problems with other dancers
all the time and complain about people bumping into
them. It is their own fault. They need to wake up
and be alert.
Third...One can do large steps forward and backwards
in close embrace, but not really side to side unless
you strtch things a bit. These side to side large
steps can happen comfortably only when you are in open
embrace, where their is room to turn the bodies and
move. Small steps are normally in close embrace and
large steps are for open
embrace.
Anyway, this is all my opinion. Thanks again for your
E-mail. Have a great evening.
Derik
