Dear friends I am glad you are trying to define tango nuevo. This is a long
way from the time it was impossible to discuss anything about  tango styles.
:)

Nuevo Tango developed a very analytic system for explaining and teaching
every single tango move.
It describes the tango choreography as a combination of three possible
steps: to the front, to the back and to the side. The turn using three
possible steps: cross front, cross back and to the side.
Each step is analyzed specifying where the weight is placed and where the
axis of the turn is situated. It teaches changes of direction in several
different ways : from back cross, from front cross and from an opening.

This (IMO) is very gratifying for many people in tango that are
perfectionist, and compulsively analytical. It could be boring and
repetitive for dancers with a different personality.  It is very useful for
anyone to understand the complexities of this dance, and how it works.

The classical Argentine pedagogical system is to show a step and let the
student copy and repeat it.
The instructor also teaches exercises to acquire the necessary skills to
perform the steps.

In its analysis uses moves typical of Salon Tango, but attempting to
extenuate all the possibilities.
For instance if the usual salon dancer does a combination of front sacada
with right leg and heel sacada with left leg, the Nuevo tango analyst will
attempt to do the same on the other side even when it is difficult and
requires loosening of the embrace, pointing of the bodies in divergent
directions, hyper rotation of the LEADER'S body and change of the arm hold.
(front sacada with left and heel sacada with right foot).

The technique is different: there is a very elastic embrace, frequent
boleos, ganchos and sacadas.
While in Salon style the bodies are well framed in front of each other here
they can point in divergent directions. Boleos and ganchos are lead by
countermotion of the body, the woman is frequently send away of the leader's
body to have more space to do certain moves, etc.

The dance effect is one of surprise rather than one of seduction and
romanticism.  The connection is as intense as in any other style. Every
Nuevo Tango dancer has his own style.

Gustavo Naveira, Fabian Salas and Chicho Frumboli are the originators of
this style.  There are some of their students dancing and teaching all over.
 This year at Cosmotango-Cita 2005 we have Claudio Fortes and Marianita
teaching the basic elements of this Style.

It cannot be danced in crowded places. IMO it may not be as elegant as
Classical Salon Style. It can be danced by anyone but requires some physical
conditioning , seems to attract young people. It is good (the same as salon)
for social and for stage dancing.

It uses all the same movements of Salon, some such as the back boleo may
have been created by Nuevo dancers.

Nuevo Tango dancers use the same music as it is used in salon or mnilonguero
styles.

and finally...something that probably will upset some of you:   I apologize
in advance my intention is to inform or to warn not to upset anyone.

Salon style (IMO) in close, open or alternating embrace continues to be the
most popular style, those that learn this style first can easily learn the
other ones.  Those that learn Nuevo first(the least popular of the three
styles) can easily dance salon but usually remain Nuevo dancers. Do not
dance while the room is crowded many will dance salon close embrace or
milonguero due to lack of space for a while,  waiting for the area to clear
and have enough space. Those that learn milonguero first(more popular than
Nuevo) will have great difficulty learning the other styles and will remain
milonguero dancers for good (this style is highly gratifying, these dancers
(abroad, not in Argentina) have no incentive to learn the other styles and
seem to spend lots of time criticizing those that dance in other
fashion).:)) and...seem to have a need to repeat that it is very good, the
real tango, that has a lot of connection, that is very romantic, that is the
only one to dance socially in Bs.As., that is the only one that affords
magic experiences, etc, etc.  :)) see? I am saving you time, I already said
it for you. :))  I convinced myself, I am going to dance milonguero to
night, and Nuevo tomorrow.
