[TANGO-L] tango dj's/non-tangos

i would happily dance to golden age tango all night.
in new york where i dj there is a very vocal minority
of younger good dancers you really want to hear
something else for a change. a lot of them are my
friends and people i like to dance with. my problem
though,is that when i do play non-traditional stuff
about 60% of the people walk off the dance floor.

who do i cater too? my friends? the best dancers? the
majority? it's a toughie. some people have made the
argument that if i played more non-traditional stuff
people would get used to it and would start dancing to
it more. not everyone wants to be challenged. i
personally love music that is easy to dance too.

what seems to be happening in new york and what i hope
will continue is that there are other dj's who enjoy
non-traditional stuff more than me and are playing it.
i really like the idea that the dj's be markedly
different. the more distinct we are the more people
have the opportunity to make choices and the more
likely they are to react differently to different
types of music. i want to think that people will dance
differently to one kind of music than another.

when i've dj'd in other communities where they are
more used to dancing to non-tango i've played it
more. i think it's kind of in fashion now to dance to
non-tango, a lot of the dj's are swapping their
non-tango cd's they compiled or got from alex krebs or
eric jorissen. i'm trying to find non-tango's i can do
ocho cortados to. it's kind of fun but as i said if it
wasn't for that people ask for it i'd rather stick to
troilo, d'arienzo , di sarli etc.
