Date: Fri, 5 Nov 1999 13:15:39 -0300 From: Janis Kenyon <jantango @FEEDBACK.NET.AR> Subject: Tango Argentino opens in BsAs Those of you who were fortunate to see the original Tango Argentino can make a comparison with the revival. I cannot. All I can say is that I looked forward with great anticipation to last night at Teatro Opera to see the show that brought Argentine tango to the world for the first time when it debuted in Paris in 1983. I was not disappointed. I had a ringside seat to see this tango production with 12 musicians, four singers, and 19 dancers. The main floor of the theater was full, probably the balcony as well, since there will be only three performances here in Buenos Aires. It was worth every cent I paid for the ticket. The highlight of the show for me was seeing Juan Carlos Copes and Maria Nieves dance to Patetico in the second act. They received applause during their entrance to the stage. It has been three years since this couple has performed together after a partnership that lasted 40 years. I had the privilege of seeing them perform at the Tango Congress concert at Northwestern University in June 1995. Seeing these legends together on stage was a moment I shall never forget. Carlos Copello and Alicia Monti are favorites of mine. Their interpretation of Recuerdo was passionate and sensual. Pablo Veron and Guillermina Quiroga were absolute perfection in three solos. This new partnership brings together their incredible talents which alone is worth the price of admission. The backbone of this spectacular production is an outstanding ensemble of musicians. They performed seven numbers alone; a great concert in itself. The cast and program follows: Bailarines: Nelida y Nelson, Hector Mayoral y Elsa Maria, Carlos y Ines Borquez, Pablo Veron y Guillermina Quiroga, Norma y Luis Pereyra, Carlos y Alicia, Johana Copes, Roberto Herrera, Lorena Yacono Artistas Invitados: Juan Carlos Copes, Maria Nieves, Pablo Veron Solistas: Vanina Bilous, Antonio Cervila Junior Cantantes: Raul Lavie, Maria Grana, Jovita Luna, Alba Solis Direccion Musical: Osvaldo Berlingieri - Roberto Pansera Musicos: Osvaldo Berlingieri - Cristian Zarate (Piano) Roberto Pansera, Horacio Romo, Alejandro Zarate (Bandoneon) Oscar Gonzalez (Bandoneon, Percusion, Flauta) Pablo Agri, Pablo Aznarez, Raul Di Renzo, Gustavo Mule, Walter Sebastian Prusac, Leonardo Suarez Paz (violin) Enrique Guerra (Contrabajo) Direccion General - Claudio Segovia Act I Quejas de bandoneon - orquesta El apache argentino - Antonio Cervila, Pablo Veron, Luis Pereyra, Juan Carlos Copes, Carlos Borquez, Carlos Copello El portenito - Guillermina Quiroga, Norma Pereyra, Alicia Monti, Johana Copes, Ines Borquez El esquinazo - Pablo Veron y Guillermina Quiroga La punalada - orquesta El choclo - orquesta La Cumparsita - Pablo Veron y Guillermina Quiroga Mi noche triste - Raul Lavie El entrerriano - Norma y Luis Pereyra De mi barrio - Jovita Luna Chique - Juan Carlos Copes y Johana Milonguita/Divina/Melenita de oro/Re-Fa-Si - Milonguita: Vanina Bilous/Rufian: Nelson/Rufian Acompanante: Nelida/El novio: Antonio Cervila Jr. Prostitutas: Elsa Maria, Norma Pereyra, Ines Borquez, Alicia Monti, Guillermina Quiroga, Johana Copes. I saw the show in SF in 1986 (at the tender age of 22) and was blown away. I'd like to relive that.
