Hi list,
I want to thank every one who contributed to the fire storm of
responses(4 of them within the hour!), some gentle some not so gentle.
They were all welcome and full of good advises, tips and more
importantly support. In short it was just great!
Thank you,

Hi List,
Does anyone know or has developed a notation system or short hand on
dance patterns. It is frustrating to go to workshops and have
forgotten 50% of what you learned the previous day and lucky if you
have retained 20% the following week.
Thank you,
Guy

Subject: Tango Miami: Tango Under the Stars
Tango Miami started a few weeks ago as a fun project of some local
tangueros: To dance tango under the stars, during Miami's lovely winter. All
teachers and dancers are invited, and it is an all volunteer effort. The
response has been overwhelming.
We are planning this season's final Tango Under the Stars event for April
12. It will be held again at 943 Lincoln Road, just across from Books and
Books and the Lincoln Rd. Cafe (South Beach). Since there will be tangueros
from around the world in Miami on that date, due to the Third Annual Tango
Congress of Miami Beach, we want to extend our invitation to all of them to
come and join us for a great tango evening.
We plan to resume our "Tango Under the Stars" events in October or November,
as soon as the temperature allows it. In the meantime we might plan some
indoor events during the summer. Please stay tuned.
Tango Miami events are free, so obviously NFI.

Subject: Dance Spectrum Workshops directions
Dear Tango Friends,
Directions to the Dance Spectrum:
The studio is located on Bascom Ave. half a block off Hamilton Ave. Hamilton
Ave. is an exit off Hwy 17. Hwy 17 is the continuation of I-880 after it
crosses I-280.
What does all this mean? Nothing really, but it kind of shows that no matter
where you go, there you are. :-)
Coming from the north (San Francisco and Peninsula cities), take I-101 or
I-280 to Hwy 17 going to Santa Cruz. DO NOT THINK ABOUT GOING TO THE BEACH.
Exit right away on the first ramp, Hamilton Ave. Turn left on Hamilton and
reach Bascon two blocks away. Turn right on Bascom Ave. and stay right just
before reaching a Jack in the Box (IF YOU MUST, AT LEAST SAY "NO ONIONS,
PLEASE!). Pull into ample parking lot. The Dance Spectrum is in the back of
the lot.
Coming from the south on I-101, take I-880 towards Santa Cruz. Exit on
Hamilton Ave.
Coming from the east, take I-880 all the way, croos I-280 and exit on
Hamilton Ave.
Coming from the west on Hwy 17, exit on Hamilton and turn right.

Subject: Julio Balmaceda and Corina de la Rosa Workshops in Denver
Julio Balmaceda and Corina de la Rosa will be in Denver giving workshops and
classes from April 7th - 18th. Classes will include basic technique for men
and women, adorments for women, milonguero style, milonga, vals and stage
tango.
Julio and Corina are the newest editions to the cast of Forever Tango that
toured the US last summer. Julio is the living legacy of the famed milonguero
Miguel Balmaceda who died a few years ago. The two of them are noted for their
style and grace in walking and presence in the dance.
The Colorado tango community invites all interested tangueros/as to visit us
in Denver for these workshops. We are a friendly tango community and there are
many people willing to share housing with visitors. It will be a rare and
magical experience.
Julio and Corina will also be performing in Denver during that time. American
Airlines has offered to sponsor the event and give away a free airline ticket
to Buenos Aires at the event.

As a yearling (or so) in my pursuit of tango, I'll pass on the best advice
I ever got on that subject: Don't concentrate on committing any of the
movements to memory (whether you think of them as patterns, figures or the
details of a technique). There may be many aspects of what you are shown at
a workshop that you are not yet ready for, in that you don't have the
framework of experience yet in which to fit the new information.
Just repeat the movement as many times as you can, and let your body absorb
as much as possible while you are in the workshop. You will use some of the
material right away. Much of it will come to the surface much later, as
your tango develops.
When you do learn a "pattern" in tango, think of it as an exercise, not a
pattern to remember. A jig-saw puzzle that can be put together many
different ways. What works for me is to practice such patterns until I
forget them. That is, to get to where my body is sufficiently familiar with
all the elements of the pattern that it can put the pieces together in the
way that fits the music and the moment on the dance floor.
As far as writing down information that you see at workshops or classes is
concerned, I haven't seen that work. Over the years, earlier in ballroom,
and now in tango, I have observed students with pad and pencil, furiously
making notations during the instruction. Invariably, they are not the best
dancers.

Subject: Traffic Flow
Hi Everyone,
My tanguero friend from Honolulu recently wrote about his frustrations on
dance floor traffic. He suggests a dream system, which sorry to say, we
can't even start implementing in the Philippine social ballroom. Only 1% of
dancers here have any idea of the LOD.
My friend NIc writes:
"Here is the recommended traffic:
All swing dancers (Fox-trot and Quickstep, and even stationary(Argentine)
Tango) must stay in the middle. All slow moving (slow because they step very
short) dancers circle around the Swing/Stationary dancers. All fast moving
(normal stride English Style dancers) dance outside of the inner circle. That
should be the traffic pattern. Make sure everyone dancing (LOD) goes CCW.
Foxtrot starts diagonal center - Tango, Waltz, Viennesse Waltz, and Quickstep
start from diagonal Wall.
That ladies and gentlemen is a traffic flow that would make everyone happy
with no dancing couples colliding with another.
Nic"

Nito & Elba Garcia will conduct a two-day workshop in Santa Barbara as the
last stop on their 1999 North American Tour.
There will be a Beginner Workshop on Saturday March 13, 1-3 PM at the
Carrillo Recreation Center, 100 E. Carrillo St. All levels are welcome--no
prior experience necessary.
The Intermediate & Advanced Workshop will be held at"A Fascinating Rhythm"
Dance Studio, 11 W. Ortega St. The Saturday session (March 13) will be 4-7
PM, and the Sunday session (March 14) will be Noon-3 PM.
For those who haven't experienced Nito & Elba, let me just say that they
are two of the finest teachers & tangueros to be found anywhere. Nito first
achieved prominence as a tango dancer in Buenos Aires in the 50's, and
later was principal dancer with the famous orchestra of Osvaldo Pugliese.
They have been featured instructors at Stanford Tango Week('96), as well as
Nora's '98 & '99 Bay Area Tango Weeks, and the '98 "Tango-at-Sea" Cruise.
Immediately following the Santa Barbara workshop, they will return to
Buenos Aires to teach at the Congreso Internacional de Tango Argentino
(CITA) organized by Fabian Salas & Gustavo Naveira.
For information about the workshops, or to arrange privates during their
visit (March 10-15) call Fay at (805) 687-2113

Subject: Re: System of notation
Regarding a system of notation for dance steps, I keyed the following into
MagicBrain (my shareware program for knowledge
capture and retrieval):
"tango dance +notation dance steps notating system"
The "+" here means "notation" is a required word in the web site.
MagicBrain then sent the query to InferenceFind. InferenceFind then did a
fast, parallel
search of 6 of the best search engines and many
interesting URLS appeared. Number one on the list was concerning
Labanotation
http://www.101percent.com/education/performingarts/dancing/ballroom/tango/re
ference/labanotation.html
...which led me to:
http://www.access.ch/private-users/amaag/Laban.html
which has some very specific examples of how to notate Argentine Tango
steps. The
discussion include narrative description of steps and charts showing:
About the notation
basico or how to write down a cruzado (Sep.96)
Two sequences with ochos, cruzados and entradas (Sep.96)
Contra parada, overtaking on the right side (26.Oct.1996)
Backward stop and backward sacada (2.Jan.1997)
Vals
A nother more general site about dance notation is:
Action Stroke Dance Notation at
http://www.geocities.com/Broadway/Stage/2806/danceno7.htm
With MagicBrain the search is more convenient for me because she saves all
my searches for future reference. Also
I don't have to login in to the Internet or navigate to a search engine. I
could do the same thing by going
directly to InferenceFind at www.InferenceFind.com except that my search is
not saved.
