I doubt that Tango is peaceful as dance or as music.
Tango as dance lets the personality out. What you get to see on the
floor you may like or dislike. You can even see many a Valentino like
brute on the dance floor. And even women in search of such brutes.
The Tango as music does not talk of a peaceful world. It often talks
of a world of disappointment, of jealousy, of loss, of uncertainty. I
have read analyses proposing that the Tango is on the rise in the rich
countries of the northern hemisphere, because the society is
increasingly uncertain. It may even in part be an effect of the
millenium hysteria. The widespread fear of social decline (in Germany,
this is the case). And also the lack of stability in social/family
structures (I have not made a statistic, but I believe that the ratio
of divorced people and singles in Tango might be impressing).
Yes, maybe we *search* peace in Tango. For three minutes. For an
evening maybe.
And then there is modern Tango, Piazzolla. His music has been
described as "urban", and indeed I think that it describes the life in
the big cities, with all its vibrant but also its disgusting aspects.
Just like Washington D.C., I guess. It is an utterly violent music!!!
I have a friend playing the cello, Piazzolla also. She says that after
practicing Piazzolla, she sometimes cannot find the peace of sleep for
hours in the night.
If the world were a more peaceful place, many people would stop to
listen to or dance the Tango.

Pat McCallum quotes a writer:

Peter Niebert counters with:

I'm not sure how the second comment relates to the first, or where this
non-argument is going to take us, but Peter's observation reinforces the
fact that tango is NOT a cure for insomnia.
For Peter's celloist friend, it's Piazzolla. For me it's Di Sarli...
D'Arienzo... Pugliese... Canaro... De Caro... Troilo... D'Agostino.......=
..
Gotta dance!
Cuando oigo el tango... mi copa llena est=E1 de olvido e ilusi=F3n ....=20
pero.... tengo que bailar.

Many is the time I've put on Pugliese as my "drift-off-to-sleep" music.
It clears my head of extraneous thoughts, focusing on the music,
somehow I drift off to a pleasant sleep.
Perhaps I'm dreaming of a favorite partner...
And yes, I love to dance to it.
Other tango instrumentals also work as lullaby music.
Vocals and Piazzolla usually don't work very well.
Perhaps this is a way to subliminally "learn" the music?
Abrazos,
Dave

Subject: Gavito in Chicago
I just got the following notice today from Bob Dronski at Tango Nada Mas
about upcoming workshops with Carlos Gavito.
I'll let the announcement speak for itself, but I want to add my
own subjective testimonial. Studying with Gavito elicited a huge
breakthrough for me. He is somehow able to impart deep lessons
about musicality and making the tango into a dance. I used to grasp
for ways to combine figures and navigate the dance floor. After
Gavito, tango became hearing the music, holding my dance partner,
and just dancing. He changed the way I dance. Women I danced with
after that commented positively on the difference (sometimes making
me wonder "how bad was I before?").
