Date: Sun, 5 Dec 1999 23:41:12 -0500 From: SERGIO <SERGIO @NCINTER.NET> Subject: A great poet of tango has died. Argentine tango has multiple manifestations, the music, the lyrics, the dance, the singers, the theater, the movies, and many others. Enrique Cadicamo was one of the great tango lyricists, at the same level with Homero Manzi and Enrique Santos Discepolo. He was born on July 15th. 1900 en Villa Lujan; not far from the city of Buenos Aires. He published his first poems, Canciones Grises(Gray Songs), in 1926. Later on, he published another famous book of poems, La luna del bajo fondo(The Moon In The Bad Part Of Town). He started writing tango lyrics in 1930. His tangos talk about the rebellious young girl decided to challenge the establishment, mostly with furs on her shoulders and pearls around her neck. He called her Milonguita. He probably wrote the lyrics for about 450 tangos. He died last Friday, December 3rd.1999, due to cardio respiratory arrest. Funeral services were held at the Argentine Association of Writers; not far from his favorite cafe, Bar-Jama. The Eulogy was read by the poet Horacio Jose Ferrer, at the end he said ..."In the Tango Motherland, a century has closed. His work was simply marvelous." Nelly, his wife of more than 40 years and his daughter Monica kissed him for the last time and he was then taken to the cemetery of La Chacarita. The regiment of Granaderos A Caballo (wearing their uniforms dating to the times of Wars of Independence) accompanied him to his resting place as the band played the Tango Nostalgias and a chorus of ladies sang in low voice. His life was very interesting and very rich in experiences of all kind. Made movies in the early times of cinematography, when this was still an adventure. Great traveler, spent long periods getting to see the world. Something that he did not know too much about was the hospital, as he had never been admitted till last November 26th. He started with some renal problems and ended his life due to a cardiac arrest in the Hospital of Cardiovascular Surgery. He was without doubt one of the greatest tango poets. I am sure he was happy to know that the tango is going through times of revival.
