<h5>By ANTHONY TOMMASINI</h5>
</NYT_BYLINE>
<p> <img src="http://graphics.nytimes.com/images/t.gif" align=left alt=T>he composer Astor Piazzolla,
who died in 1992, was engaged in a
difficult stylistic balancing act. He
took South American tango music --
the traditional, gritty, erotic tango,
not the tidy, playful equivalent you
encounter in American ballroom
dancing -- and infused it with elements of classical music and jazz.
The idea was to turn the dance into
something musically elaborate without losing its authenticity.
<p> That Piazzolla largely succeeded
is attested by the current popularity
of his music around the world, not
just with audiences but with musicians as far afield as Chick Corea
and Yo-Yo Ma. So special are the
Piazzolla tangos that their impact
came through even in "Tango Magic," an overproduced variety show of
a concert that drew a capacity audience to Carnegie Hall on Tuesday
night.
<p> You would think that the producers Ettore Stratta and Pat Philips
didn't trust Piazzolla's music. How
else to explain the presence of a
superfluous host, Bob Jones, who effusively introduced the performers
and shared a recent personal epiphany about Piazzolla. "The tango tells
us about ourselves," he said. At one
point, a representative from Continental Airlines, the event's sponsor,
delivered what he forthrightly called
a commercial, complete with details
about the number of weekly flights to
South America that the airline offers.
<p> Musically, the program was
crowded with too many different performers. The principal ensemble
was the excellent Quintet for New
Tango, headed by the pianist Pablo
Ziegler, a Piazzolla disciple and a
fine tango composer in his own right.
When the quintet was featured, the
results were rewarding, as in Piazzolla's insistent, rigorously contrapuntal "Fugata," and in "Oblivion,"
in which Hector Del Curto played
wistful, piercing solos on the bandoneon, a type of Argentine accordion.
<p> But the balance was not right between the heavily amplified quintet
and the mushy-sounding contributions of some dozen players from the
chamber orchestra Orpheus, who
provided background harmony and
soaring, sometimes soupy, high
string lines.
<p> Several other soloists participated: the brilliant, musically adventurous violinist Gidon Kremer, a Piazzolla champion; two acclaimed Argentine singers, Maria Grana and
José Angel Trelles; the inventive
jazz vibraphonist Gary Burton, and
two pairs of Argentine tango dancers. However, just as you would begin to enjoy one group of artists,
another would take its place.
<p> Kremer's string trio played
just two short works, including the
haunting "Milonga Sin Palabras" (a
ruminative violin melody hovers
over a gently rippling viola figure,
supported by a plucked cello line in
tango rhythm). But then Ms. Grana,
who has been called the "Judy Garland of the tango" took the stage for
an emotive set of Piazzolla vocal
works.
<p> The stern-faced dancers were
lithe, charismatic and expert at executing those twitchy leg movements
that are the tango's mating call. But
there was little space for them to
dance in, and a full view of their
movements was annoyingly blocked
by two speakers on the rim of the
stage.
<p> The program also introduced
Ryota Komatsu, a talented young
bandoneon player. It's a testimony to
the reach of Piazzolla's music that
new tango virtuosi are coming out of
Japan. On the other hand, that this
program is to be videotaped this
week in a Sony studio in New York
for eventual broadcast on public television may also have had something
to do with his appearance.

Subject: Tango in Springfield Missouri?
This note is from a friend of mine who could not post to the list....
I have a friend who just moved from Northern California to Tango
Limbo,
also known as Springfield Missouri. She tells me that non tangoing
Springfield is about a four hour drive from St Louis, and that as
far as
she
can tell there is no tango in the big city either. Can anyone on
this list
give my friend hope till she returns to California in the Summer?
Please respond to sean3 @compuserve.com

I am exploring interest in the Argentine tango here in Northern New
Jersey. Might there be enough interest to establish a regular milonga? To
bring in a teacher(s) for a workshop?

OK, someone has to state the obvious. Tango is about people.
I don't think you can view manners or consideration for others (and
especially your partner) as separate from the dance. We're reminded often
enough on this list that it is your partner who matters and not the steps.
The memorable tangos for me have had little to do with the steps and the
most enjoyable milongas or practicas have had everything to do with the
people, the sociability of the event, and the music. The dance vocabulary,
like a speaking vocabulary, seems to take care of itself.

The Ohio Chamber Orchestra, is presenting "DARK PASSION"
at Playhouse Square's Allen Theater at 8:15 tonight
Peter Soave would be enough of a draw on a normal night. But wait. There's
more. Karen Gabay and Raymond Rodriguez two stars of the Cleveland San Jose
Ballet company will perform a sultry tango called "POR UNA CARBEZ".
Afterwards Timmy Tango will teach some beginning tango and play music for a
milonga in the Rotunda of the theater.
Cost is $20 at the door

Subject: Gardel Photo
Hi all,
Perhaps someone can direct me to a source where I can obtain a print of a
photo of Carlos Gardel. I've checked out web sites that sell music,
posters, books, etc., but haven't found what I'm looking for.
I want to get an 11" x 14" or at least an 8" x 10" photo for framing. The
classic pose with the hat and the big smile.

Hi y'all,
According to the current distribution count, there are 896 subscribers to
Tango-L. By the time you get this message, we might hit 900, and at the
current growth rate, the 1,000 mark is only about 6 months away.
We should consider a prize to be awarded to the 1,000th subscriber. One
suggestion is a pass to post 10 dumb messages without getting flamed.
Hmmmm. Maybe I should drop out so I can re-subscribe and compete for the
prize.
If I do, will this message count against my 10?
