Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2000 01:10:56 -0700 From: Linda Valentino <LindaValentino @PRODIGY.NET> Subject: NA-W: American Choreography Awards I just came back from attending the American Choreography Awards with Juan Carlos Copes and Carlos Rivarola. I'm very happy to report that they and Ana Maria Steckleman won the 1999 American Choreography Award for Best Choreography in a Feature Film for the movie "Tango." The Award is given annually by the Academy of Dance on Film, a non-profit organization which is dedicated to preserving, documenting and advancing filmed dance. They have an outstanding library documenting classical, modern and ethnic dance around the world, along with other educational and research activities. The show itself was spectacular, featuring filmed and live dance numbers from some of the greatest choreographers and dancers in the world. Awards were also given for choreography in the category of television, music videos and commercials. Needless to say, Maestro Copes and Carlos Rivarola were absolutely thrilled and honored. It was really wonderful to see the dance that we love recognized by such an important part of the dance world.

Date: Sat, 23 Sep 2000 00:54:38 -0400 From: Jason Laughlin - Baila Tango NC <jason @BAILATANGO.COM> Subject: NA-E: Natalia y Gabriel Workshops, Raleigh-Durham, NC, 29 Sep-1 Oct For latest info: http://www.bailatango.com/nc/ Only one week to go before Natalia y Gabriel arrive for their first visit to the Triangle! In addition to teaching 12 full hours of workshops, they'll be providing a special performance on Saturday Sept 30th at El Chilango! These wonderful dancers have toured with Tangox2 for 8 years, and teach regularly in Buenos Aires and Europe. They also taught previously at the US Tango Congress in Miami. You can learn a little more about them here http://www.geocities.com/Broadway/Stage/6854/ . There are a couple of things I want to point out about the schedule that make it a little different than workshops you may have attended in the past. 1. Each day will have 4 workshops of 1.5 hours each. That's 6 hours per day, 12 total. To accomodate the amount of time, I've tried to compress the schedules while providing breaks. Each day is divided into 2 classes, then lunch, followed by 2 more classes. 2. I've put the more complicated material earlier in the schedule with the more general material later. The intent is that the material may get easier as you get more tired. 3. The weekend is primarily int/advanced, with only 3 general level workshops available. These are scheduled at the end of the day on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday's last two classes are General Technique and Musicality, wrapping up at 6:30. This should make it easy for people (especially the newer dancers) to attend workshops and then stay for the Triangle Tangueros practica (at 7) to work on what they've learned. 4. The Int/Adv Tango figures and the Milonga de traspie classes are broken up over the two days. I expect that the 2nd parts will build on the 1st part, but I don't know how much overlap there'll be. Here's the schedule. Friday, Sept 29 7:30-10:00 Practica Saturday, Sept 30 10:30-12:00 Int/Adv: Amagues, sacadas, voleos y arrastres 12:00-1:30 Int/Adv: Milonga de traspie y Contratiempos 1 1:30-2:45 Lunch 3:00-4:30 Int/Adv: Vals: Enrosques y Giros avanzados 4:45-6:15 All: Embellishments Saturday Night at El Chilango 8:45-9:45pm Free Introductory Workshop (by Jason Laughlin) 10pm-12:00 Performance and Milonga!!! Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2000 20:19:04 EDT From: Martha Ledger <LedgerX2 @AOL.COM> Subject: NA-W: Tango in Hawai'i? Hi, I'll be spending two weeks on the Big Island photographing volcanoes and am wondering if there is any tango being danced there. I'll be based closer to Hilo than to Kona but will have a car and would travel to dance. Many thanks for any information. Martha on the Atlantic Coast
